GOP’s Meijer voted to impeach Trump. Now Democrats are helping his Trump-backed GOP primary opponent
The Washington Post ^ | July 27, 2022 | Colby Itkowitz

Posted on 07/27/2022 9:11:30 PM PDT by Trump20162020

Eighteen months ago, Rep. Peter Meijer joined just nine other House Republicans and voted to impeach Donald Trump. This week, he learned that the Democrats he stood with then were spending nearly half a million dollars to help his Trump-backed challenger defeat him.

“I assumed it might happen,” Meijer, a 34-year-old freshman Republican from Michigan, said in a Tuesday interview. The “high-minded rhetoric” of his Democratic colleagues, he added, had been “translated into galling hypocrisy” by a party committee running ads to boost John Gibbs, a former Trump administration official who baselessly claimed in an interview that the 45th president’s defeat in 2020 looked “mathematically impossible.”

Desperate to retain control of Congress in November in the face of stiff political head winds, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has become the latest party entity this election year to aid a Trump-endorsed Republican in a primary against a candidate who has resisted the former president. The $435,000 investment calls Gibbs “too conservative” in ads and highlights his connection to Trump — a winking message meant to boost his appeal to conservative primary voters.

The DCCC’s investment in Michigan’s 3rd District — which was redrawn in the decennial redistricting process to become more Democratic — marks the first time the House Democratic campaign arm put money behind an ad interfering in a GOP primary. The investment is more than the $334,000 that Gibbs has spent on his own campaign.

“Obviously, our focus is on winning 218 seats, and each race will require a slightly different strategy,” DCCC Chair Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) told NBC News. “We think this makes sense in this case.”

Sorry but I have to strongly disagree. If a political party and its base voters don’t punish traitorous politicians then they can expect to be betrayed in the future. It’s better to have an enemy outside the walls than a traitor within the gates. It is RINO season and there’s no bag limit.

I don’t know of any. There are folks in state GOP leadership who were Bush supporters but I haven’t seen any evidence that a Bush is controlling them or that they are putting Bush family interests over the party’s.

Meanwhile we are running a guy for AG who is a proven loser over a guy who is well-liked by elected Republicans in both state houses and whom polls show has a legit shot at beating Nessel. Why? Because the party leadership’s Trump faction wanted DePerno.

"How was Meijer a traitor?"

Did you even bother to read the title of the article? Eighteen months ago, Rep. Peter Meijer joined just nine other House Republicans and voted to impeach Donald Trump.

You just outed yourself as a troll. Begone and get yourself back onto DU.

I’d vote for Gibbs, too, but not because the Dems are trying to pull an Akin. Their scare ads would factor nada in my decision.

So by calling him “traitor” do you mean Meijer committed a prosecutable offense? Or is that just political hyperbole?

If you prefer Gibbs then you prefer losing that seat.

Me, I’d like to take the House back. But you do you.

Absolutely. But I’m not going to do it just to have it riddled with people who cast frivolous impeachment votes and act as Assistant Democrats.

Thanks to such folks, the so-called Red Wave will merely be a red ripple. We have had it with these turncoats.

So a guy who can actually hold the local seat for the GOP is somehow going to hurt *national* GOP prospects.

I gotta hear this line of reasoning.

He may hold it, but don’t be surprised if he starts reaching out to his “friends” across the aisle next year.

[The way this is playing out helps Meijer. Lotta congressional Dems bashing their party leadership over this. The optics back Meijer’s public response on the issue.

Now if we could only get Trumpist influence out of state GOP leadership.....]

Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future. BigDataPoll, which predicted a 3-point Youngkin win https://townhall.com/tipsheet/rebeccadowns/2021/10/30/this-is-real-glenn-youngkin-ahead-of-terry-mcauliffe-in-more-polls-n2598255 (vs the actual 2-pointer), unlike the vast majority of polls, which predicted a McAuliffe victory, had these numbers a couple of weeks ago:

https://twitter.com/IAPolls2022/status/1548003491020361733
GOP PRIMARY
John Gibbs 46%
Peter Meijer 28%

GENERAL ELECTION
(R) John Gibbs 46% (+1)
(D) Hilary Scholten 45%

(D) Hilary Scholten 43% (+12)
(R) Peter Meijer 31%

If its methodology is worth anything, Gibbs might have a fighting chance.

Quit trying to parse the definition of traitor. You know exactly what I mean when I use it. The sneaky, duplicitous punk needs to go.

I think the 3 meaning of the definition of traitor covers Meijer pretty well.

traitor

trā′tər

noun

  1. One who betrays one's country, a cause, or a trust, especially one who commits treason.
  2. One who violates his allegiance and betrays his country; one who is guilty of treason. See treason.
  3. One who betrays any trust; a person guilty of perfidy or treachery; one who violates confidence reposed in him.

Here is the source of the definition https://www.wordnik.com/words/traitor

Do you feel educated? Do you?

Always happy to help.

The Washington political establishment’s plan is clear. Cheat Trump endorsed candidates in the general election and then blame Trump for republican election losses. The republican party are traitors to America just like the democrats.

My own congressman, well known as a gold-standard RINO, endorsed by multiple gun grabber groups and a bunch of labor unions, has voted for a number of odious pieces of legislation. He is the lowest-rated Republican in Congress, according to the American Conservative Union.

But even HE didn’t vote for impeachment.

Meijer is being repaid for his services to the Uniparty/Deep State.
