GOP’s Meijer voted to impeach Trump. Now Democrats are helping his Trump-backed GOP primary opponent

Eighteen months ago, Rep. Peter Meijer joined just nine other House Republicans and voted to impeach Donald Trump. This week, he learned that the Democrats he stood with then were spending nearly half a million dollars to help his Trump-backed challenger defeat him.

“I assumed it might happen,” Meijer, a 34-year-old freshman Republican from Michigan, said in a Tuesday interview. The “high-minded rhetoric” of his Democratic colleagues, he added, had been “translated into galling hypocrisy” by a party committee running ads to boost John Gibbs, a former Trump administration official who baselessly claimed in an interview that the 45th president’s defeat in 2020 looked “mathematically impossible.”

Desperate to retain control of Congress in November in the face of stiff political head winds, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has become the latest party entity this election year to aid a Trump-endorsed Republican in a primary against a candidate who has resisted the former president. The $435,000 investment calls Gibbs “too conservative” in ads and highlights his connection to Trump — a winking message meant to boost his appeal to conservative primary voters.

The DCCC’s investment in Michigan’s 3rd District — which was redrawn in the decennial redistricting process to become more Democratic — marks the first time the House Democratic campaign arm put money behind an ad interfering in a GOP primary. The investment is more than the $334,000 that Gibbs has spent on his own campaign.

“Obviously, our focus is on winning 218 seats, and each race will require a slightly different strategy,” DCCC Chair Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) told NBC News. “We think this makes sense in this case.”

From Ballotpedia:
John Gibbs was born in Michigan. He received a bachelor's degree from Stanford University in 2001 and a graduate degree from Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government, in 2016. Gibbs worked as a software engineer and joined the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as a senior advisor in 2017 before Trump appointed him acting assistant secretary for community planning and development in 2020.

Each race requires a different form of cheating.

I’m willing to bet their interference will backfire spectacularly. Gibbs will win. When inflation is this bad, the economy gets worse daily, crime is soaring, there is no more border, foreign policy lurches from one disaster after another......what kind of electorate does anybody think is going to show up in November?

There’s a lot of buyer’s remorse among Biden voters. How many more will just stay home this November? Trump voters OTOH will show up in droves.

Trumpist influence out of state GOP leadership?

We need exactly the opposite. We need to get RINO influence out of GOP leadership at all levels and Trumpist/MAGA influence in.

How was Meijer a traitor?

He voted for Shampeachment II. That tells me everything I need to know. He’s a traitor.

So by calling him “traitor” do you mean Meijer committed a prosecutable offense? Or is that just political hyperbole?

Meijer committed an offense and has been found guilty in the court of public opinion. You can't go along with a Democrat driven sham impeachment on the basis of no evidence and expect to retain the trust of your constituents.

So a guy who can actually hold the local seat for the GOP is somehow going to hurt *national* GOP prospects.

I don't care if you're holding a seat. Its of no value whatsoever if you are a traitor who cannot be counted on. My loyalty is not to the Republican Party. My loyalty is to MAGA and to America. If that means several RINO turds must be flushed out of the Republican party in order to turn it into a real opposition...a party that actually reflects our values and interests....then so be it. Meijer is one of those turds to be flushed.

“Meijer is one of those turds to be flushed.”

His opponent was on War Room yesterday and was wearing a button, “Feijer Meijer”. The guy sounded pretty good.

The man is a stupid and dishonorable @$$, and stabbing your own side in the back should always result in disaster for whomever does it.

Would rather have a Democrat take a seat away from a backstabbing Republican.

Now if we could only get Trumpist influence out of state GOP leadership.....

Trump is the only one who puts up a fight. People are sick and tired of cowardly do-nothing milquetoast "conservatives" who never conserve anything.

The technical term for your take is “cuckoo for cocoa puffs”.

Well it's beginning to look like *YOU* are part of the problems with our country.

Clearly you are part of the lie cabal that wants everyone to believe the elections were legitimate, but this constant effort at propaganda doesn't appear to be working.

There was no skulduggery; no steal.

And you know this because all the popular news-liars on television have repeatedly told you so.

Doubt you have done any actual research on the topic yourself. Doubt you've read any of the massive numbers of articles demonstrating where cheating occurred, what sort of cheating it was, and how it was accomplished.

I see you mocking Kiryandil, and this man has done yeoman's work in analyzing the actual data and showing astonishing discrepancies in elections from previous years to the 2020 election.

Learn whereof you speak. Don't accept bullsh*t just because the person telling it is popular. Break out of the "herd mentality."

An enemy is less dangerous than a traitor.

Backstabbers always need to go. It needs to be understood by all and sundry that if you stab us in the back, you lose your cushy office.

The Democrat officials all know this. That's why *THEY* have party discipline and can present a united front. Traitors to the Democrats get removed from office.

That's how it is done.

I gotta hear this line of reasoning.

I'm getting the impression that you won't be able to comprehend it. The concept is self evident to most people, and if you don't grasp it, I think it would be like explaining color to a blind man.

But i'll take a quick stab at it.

John McCain. Arlen Specter. Lisa Murkowski, Liz Cheney. Jeff Flake.

Anything coming to you yet?

Thanks for the hat-tip.  ROFL face

Stalwart Michigan Republicans are a peculiar breed. They're either all in on the collusion with the party across the aisle, or they are like Sergeant Schultz when the blatant vote fraud is rubbed in their faces.

Those types prefer not to know, and they go with what all the popular news-liars on television have repeatedly told them, as you wrote.
