The industrial shift for India from what has been its most very long term military equipment supplier for decades - back into the Soviet era, which is Russia, cannot be done quickly without imposing cost and supply constraints that are not in the best interest of the immediate military strength requirments of India.
The U.S. position vis-a-vis Taiwan is not likely to become, for India, an “ally” issue with the U.S., until and unless a Chinese invasion happens. Until then, India will not see the opening of a “second front” with China in its interest. One front with China, and dealing with that one, diplomatically and militarily is all India sees in its immediate concern. Any change will come by way of future events, but not at the moment just to improve the stated common theme of the Quad group for the the long run.
However, it might being acting more “neutral” with respect to Russia-Uraine and the west, than is in its longest term interest, if the Quad is truly in its long term interest. It could well maintain its military equipment supply lines with Russia, without KowTowing to Russia as much as it is diplomatically at this point.
Howver again, India’s ongoing poisition vis-a-vis Russia will likely make the two either no less closer, or even closer, in different ways, given either the best or the worts outcomes for Russia in Ukraine. Russia will continue to be India’s main military supply partner, likely no matter what, and that self-serving relationship will continue to color India’s other relationships with Russia for the forseeable future.
At some point, depending on events, the Quad may be reduced to a Tripod.
We must insist that India buy more of our rainbow flags.
India is an enemy, NOT OUR FRIEND. We should not be helping them beyond sending home ALL Indians currently in the US.
It is the world’s largest democracy
which impedes them greatly, democracy is a bad joke
I respect India for looking out for its own national interests. I only wish we would do the same.
Trump promised to cut off countries that refused to take back their deportees, India didn’t and Trump folded. We should cut them off, rescind all visas, and deport everyone. Further, we should look at commerce with India and cut it off until the above done. If they are not our friend, which they are not, let’s not be doing business with them at all.
If democracy is a bad joke, what’s a good joke?
The tendencies we exhibit to do such things is exactly why India is in the BRICS camp with Russia and China. That’s a pretty potent group. On the other hand it’s the traitors, globalists and perverts in DC along with every perverted, woke deadbeat “ally” we take along for the ride.
Let them support themselves!
My name is Apu.
How may I help you?
More like 4 times. And we have about 3 times the GNP.
“USA is still giving Pakistan Billions in foreign aid every year. I canâÂÂt blame India for being suspicious of USA.”
I tend to agree with you. Strangely, the U.S. appears to support troublemaker Islamic groups in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
democracy is 2x wolves and a lamb voting on lunch
silly
If there’s twice as many wolves as sheep, the sheep get eaten whatever is the system.
But, if there’s more sheep than wolves, the sheep have a chance with democracy.
On the contrary the current Indian Govt just passed laws that 80% of all defence supplies must be made in India. Even US and European companies having plants in India qualify. By next year. the only imports allowed will be major systems and tech that cannot be made here, like aircraft and ship engines.
FYI, all new proposed orders for Russian aircraft have been scrapped because there is a severe shortage of spares. After already placed orders are filled, only unique systems like the S-400 / S-500 will be purchased. And nuke subs and Tu-223 White Swan bombers leased. The need for spares for existing equipment, unfortunately will keep India dependent on the Russians for 2 decades more though.
At some point, depending on events, the Quad may be reduced to a Tripod.
India needs the Quad . The Quads focus is only China. Russia-Ukraine should not be mixed up in the Quad. Biden doing so greatly pleased the Chinese.
India and Japan are most at threat from China. There are undeclared hostilities in the Himalayas between China and India. No way India leaves the Quad unless the focus shifts from China
Actually Nehru asked Kennedy for help during the 1962 China war and Kennedy agreed to deploy the USAF in NE India. The Chinese were forced to withdraw from their occupied territories.
After Nehru, the Russkies got their toe in the Indian door when the US supplied lots of contemporary weapons to Pakistan and when Nixon put his full weight behind Pakistan, sending the Enterprise BG to threaten India during the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence, the die was cast. It was Nixon who finally kicked India into the Russki Camp.
Read "The Blood Telegram" by by the then US Consul in Dhaka, Archer Blood to know just how Nixon felt about India. And the Genocide he permitted.
the fact is India was basically part of Soviet war planning as an asset available to its forces
as a matter of fact, the Russians never even got a staging post on Indian territory, forget troops or a base. India troops have gone abroad only under the auspices of the UN except the deployment to Sri Lanka and the air armada to Maldives which were in danger of being overrun by terrorists. Both deployments in response to the countries appeals for help.
Wanting and doing have long had gaps in India.
“But Sipri said India’s military imports are likely to grow over the next five years. “As India perceives increasing threats from Pakistan and China and as its ambitious plans to produce its own major arms have been significantly delayed, it is planning large-scale programmes for arms imports. Based on its outstanding deliveries of combat aircraft, air defence systems, ships and submarines, India’s arms imports are expected to increase over the coming five years,” the report said.”
India hates us for the same reason they hate the Brits. Guess what it is?
