Why would German officers be saluting Red Army officers six weeks before Barbarossa?
Russia also has their sabre rattling Lindsay Grahams.
That map is visually compelling, but Scandanavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) are still using the krona, and the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) are using the pound sterling, and have also done Brexit.
Soviet statues being torn down is ALEAYS a good thing.
ALL Soviet monument sshould be torn down.
While both officailly neutral, Spain tilted toward the Axis powers and Portugal tilted away.
Doesn't change the intended message of the EU as a 21st century Reich with Germany at its center.
We'll see how well that holds up this winter...
“Germany and Russia were never allies”
Nazi Germany and the USSR were inarguably allied in their mutual conquest and division of Poland. The infamous Katyn Forest Massacre where 50,000 Polish civilian and military leaders was carried out by the bloodsucking Russians and thousands of the victims were sent to the Russians by their Nazi buddies.
You may not like this but that’s a fact.
My personal regret in history is that the Western allies aided the USSR due to pressure from their own communist parties.
I can only hope to see China invade and retake Siberia while the West refuses to aid the thug regime in Moscow. Perhaps the Chinese will be so kind as to visit a massacre upon the Russians as the Russians have been all too willing to visit upon others.
German/Soviet military cooperation dated to the early ‘20s with the Germans circumventing the restrictions on their military of the Versailles by secret cooperation on weapons R&D conducted in the Soviet Union, benefitting both militaries.
Military courtesy, ie, salutes, are extended to all recognized military officers, even in war time between belligerents.
Treaty of Versailles.
They’re not “Soviet monuments” they are memorials to fallen soldiers. Germany has many such monuments to her war dead in WW2 and no one is braying for their removal. But the level of mouth-foaming Russophobia in the west makes the destruction of all memories of the fallen a social virtue. I bet the same people calling for the destruction of memorials of the millions of Russians who paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting Hitler’s genocide of millions of eastern Untermench are the same people who are shocked and appalled when BLM and Antifa topple confederate memorials to the fallen. Because the main thing isn’t truth, it’s the little dopamine hits from manufactured outrage. People arent thinking anymore - they’re emoting, and spewing. That’s 40 years of Social emotional learning- America and especially Europe have become a declining civilization of angry crybabies but with a vast MIC and nuclear arsenals.
Atrocities in Poland are a fact. A fact between Nazi Germany and the USSR- two countries that no longer exist. Are we going to engage in the number one pastime of progressive liberals the world over-emotional blackmail and collective guilt? Then let’s just call Katyn understandable payback for the Poles invading Moscow and occupying the Kremlin during the era of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. Never forget!
I guess you aren't a Norm Macdonald fan.
“A fact between Nazi Germany and the USSR- two countries that no longer exist.”
I keep hearing from the pro-Russian and pro-Putinist wing of FR that the USSR doesn’t exist yet here they are on this very thread making clear that latter day Russia and the USSR are synonymous when it comes to their obscene war memorials.
“Germany has many such monuments to her war dead in WW2 and no one is braying for their removal.”
1. 90% of Nazi monuments were damaged during WW2 and 60% were destroyed outright.
2. The remaining Nazi monuments in Europe were destroyed after 1945. Even monuments to WW1 and previous wars were destroyed within Germany.
3. The reason no one is clamoring to remove any Nazi monuments today is that they were removed almost eighty years ago.
4. Monuments to the rapists and plunderers of the USSR outside of Russia should likewise be destroyed if that is the will of the local people. If Soviet Russia wishes to pine away for their glory days then that’s up to them to do on their own soil.
That's it in a nutshell.
You skipped history classes too. Spain and Portugal were led by fascist dictators even though they professed neutrality. Franco accepted Germany's assistance in the Spanish Civil War and Portugal's Salazar supported Franco.
But even though Salazar claimed neutrality, in July 1940 he allowed 2,500 British evacuees from Gibraltar to be shipped to Madeira island. Then later he allowed Brittan to use Lajes Field, Azores (Portuguese Air Base No. 4) to stage air cover for Allied shipping convoys.
Churchill recognized Salazar for his support:
... many MPs had not known that Portugal and England had the oldest operational alliance in the world, the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of 1373. Churchill ended his speech saying:In spite of all that, Spain and Portugal did not fight against Hitler and their Fascist governments lasted decades after WWII.I take this opportunity of placing on record the appreciation by His Majesty's Government, which I have no doubt is shared by Parliament and the British nation, of the attitude of the Portuguese Government, whose loyalty to their British Ally never wavered in the darkest hours of the war. [8]
So, I say, flip a coin on that map thingy.
Beyond that, there's a monument to the prisoners of war who came home years after the war ended, a monument to the U-boot crews of WWI that was adapted to honor those in WWII as well, and monuments to those killed in the bombing attacks (including one in Dresden which was attacked by Antifa). That's about it. There may be more monuments to WWII Soviet troops in Germany than to WWII German troops, but the Germans are in a unique position. Not every country is going to be like that.
LOL
“The Russian victory over Germany was a myth? Really? They shouldered about 80% of the battle and the sacrifices of WW2”
Stop swallowing Soviet propaganda. Taking 80% of the Allied casualties in WWII is because they Soviet Army was incompetent and their generals didn’t care how many men were ground up.
