I live in Houston and have lived in Causeway Bay Hong Kong, the most crowded and walkable neighborhood on Earth.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

Yep. Living in a downtown environment you can do a lot without a vehicle. There are downsides as you say. Such as grocerie stores,hardware and Malls.
Those for the most part are in the suburbs. Shoplifting is the main reason for that. IMO.
