ROCK HILL, S.C. (WBTV) - A gun was found in a student’s car at Rock Hill High School on Wednesday, the York County Sheriff’s Office said.

This comes after two guns had already been found at schools within the district this academic year, with all three now being discovered within the past three days.

Deputies searched the student’s vehicle after receiving a tip.

The student was confronted and took off running. Deputies are still attempting to track down that student.

”We will be more proactive in addressing safety and security in all of our schools,” Rock Hill Schools district spokesperson Lindsay Machak said. “When it comes to district administration, this is the kind of stuff that keeps us up at night. This is the thing that worries us. This is the thing we are consistently, constantly worried about and trying to improve upon.”

The school district has already put some measures, such as random searches, into place to improve security. The district is pushing the 24-hour tipline that everyone can use.

Schools in the district have metal detectors, but they aren’t currently meant for everyday use. The school board could elect to change that.

“The number one goal is to make sure that everyone in that building is safe and secure,” board chairwoman and Rock Hill Schools parent Helena Miller said.

Miller said that the board will have an agenda item discussing the firearm-related incidents and what it can do to address them.

“What other measurements can we take? And that is the next step to have a conversation about what is the next step that can be taken in order to make sure that we are on the forefront,” she said. “If it was as easy as implementing X and it would all be magically

Democrat kids? What are you going to do with them? It's against the law to put them in time out.

Surely we can find a Republican to blame this on.

When I was in HS, in the 70’s, there would have been half a dozen rifles in guys pickups, in plain sight, in their gun rack in the cab, ready for hunting.

I thought your vehicle and the contents of it were your own private property? so what if the kid had a gun in the car? maybe the owner felt the need to have access to personal protection in case a school shooter attached the school. after the non-performance of the police at Uvalde a couple of months back, who could blame them?

Up until the late 80s was like that when I was in HS about 30 miles from Rock Hill.

Just about every guy had a pocket knife. Using either on someone else was unheard of.

Those were the good old days. Now to put it mildly: It’s a Jungle Out There!

At my junior high, we had an indoor rifle range next to our wood/metal shops.

I know times are different. But when I went to H.S. plenty of kids had guns in window racks in their PU’s

They only kicked God out of our public schools, but not the devil. Parents and "educators" don't have a problem with Satan being there, and apparently he can bring all his friends with him, too.

Exactly. We had a marksmanship club and competed against other local schools.

In my high school, police could have confiscated an armory of firearms by simply opening the unlocked doors on the pickups trucks in the parking lot on any day except opening day of elk season when the parking lot was almost empty.

In my junior high school in the 70s, one of the shop projects was building a knife.

Early 80s a wooden gun rack was the project I chose.

I think I got a B.

It was 6th grade give or take a year.

You bring up an interesting point as there is no mention of a search warrant in the excerpt. Perhaps it’s in the student code of conduct: If you park on school property you give us the right to search your vehicle.

Like a lot of FReepers, when we were in high school it would have been odd to NOT see a gun in a car. Unlocked too. Wonder what changed?

This should surprise no one. Sex, drugs, hip hop and firearms are the new norm for a certain teen demographic these days.
