Putin will be ousted in some manner and his regime of gangsters and crooks ended in favor of a new democratic order.

I think the 1st part of that may occur, the latter is very iffy. It would likely take trauma similar to what Japan suffered in WW2 to change Russia's foundations, and with Japan we had the advantage of a still revered Emperor willing to work with us...

As for a Ukrainian "full victory", I think that to do it in under 5 years our level of weapons support must go up a lot. How do we supply enough HIMARS, for example, when the munitions (rockets) mfgr. is still studying* how to ramp up production less than 100%, and major orders are coming in, from Poland, for one...?

*I'd have never believed that had I not heard it right out of the CEO's mouth a few days ago! :-(

So, in other words they are disingenuous cowards.

There are several techniques pinpointing them. Obviously, it would be bad strategy giving them the blueprint on how we do this. I would say though... it’s good they know we know...

I'd say so! If they didn't know that we know then it would just be chaos around here. It's probably best that we keep this on the down low, mum's the word.

Girkin is, just by his own statements and admissions, evil personified. An angel of Satan for sure. But he likely does have pretty good chops when it comes to assessing the battlefield. Might publicly exaggerate somewhat, for his own purposes.

Ukraine is unlikely to relent in that US and NATO support continues and a full victory is increasingly possible, with Russia ejected from all occupied territories, including Crimea.

Russia will go nuclear should the above become likely.

HIMARS inventory and production are issues, but other similar weapons are available in the US arsenal, like ATACAMS missiles and MLRS and GMLRS rocket artillery. My guess is that HIMARS was chosen as easier for the Ukrainians to use without extensive training. With Ukrainians now receiving training on NATO bases, my guess is that they will soon be able to use a fuller set of missiles and rocket artillery.

As for Russia, a catastrophic military defeat, major troop casualties, economic distress, and the discrediting of the regime's narrative supporting its legitimacy are at hand or in the offing. With Ukraine beginning to advance and economic sanctions biting hard on Russian state finances and the private economy, the West has considerable leverage.

Consider what could happen if Putin is out in some manner, a military-political junta is installed in power, and they announce a desire for a truce in the field and peace negotiations. That is easy enough to arrange, but if Russia experiences a military collapse, Ukraine continues to get Western military help, and most economic sanctions are kept in place, Russia's new regime will be on shaky ground and a democratic system and nuclear retrenchment could be required by the West.

For the US, the winning hand would be the installation of a friendly new government in Russia that assures access to Russia's natural resources and denies support for China's imperial ambitions. One can hope.

A use of nuclear weapons would end Russia as an organized society. My guess is that the US and the EU have laid out a peace proposal to Putin's foreign minister, Lavrov, that, among other things, lets Putin and his cronies go into secure foreign exile with a choice of hospitable venues and a slice of their wealth available. With the Russian security services edging away from Putin, his control of the Russian nuclear arsenal is likely now subject to their veto.

Let me rephrase my comments.

Previous administrations like Carter wanted to maintain a kind of parity which the Soviet Union could and did keep up with the West. However Reagen, through his so called “Star Wars” program would render the Soviets balance of power impotent,or so they teared as the Soviets couldn’t afford a technology race, both in money and scientific.
This is what brought Gorbachev to the table and long story short, the collapse of the Soviet Union. With credit to Margarette Thatcher, Pope John Paul II and Lech Walinski.

You failed to mention that Poland was an aggressor in 1919 and her attack was repelled, in 1940 Finland has lost the war, and I have no idea where the myth that the Soviets lost in Afghanistan comes from. They certainly didn’t run away from the Embassy in helicopter.

The Soviet union was communist. Even the Democrats aren’t that level.

The Soviets had gulags, no freedom of speech and lots of secret police. The USA even at its worst is not at that level, nowhere near that level.

The USSR had no allies, just satellite states. The USA has actual allies.

And I can go on and on...

Russia wants to end itself forever in nuclear fire rather than leave Ukraine alone?

Are you sure of that?

I thought you meant the usual pro-Russia threat of nuclear war.

There are FReepers who have been following following the troll/Pooty Pal issue for a long time. I have now received 3 lists compiled over time as this crisis has evolved over the months. Cabojoe’s name was on the first list I was given in April and contained over 100 names. I have seen at keast 20 of those names in recent months consistently saying favorable things about Putin/Russia, or saying the US should NOT be helping Ukraine because we have big problems of our own. One of the pro Russia commenters on this thread is kiryandil, I noticed others, but don’t remember which ones as I have read several Ukraine posts today and there are usually 5 or 6 pro Russia commenters on each one, who are also on these lists.

You are right, Russia did not “run away from the Embassy in helicopters”. Gorbachev was smart enough to see they were loosing, and worked with international agencies to negotiate an orderly withdrawal. This detailed link on the whole 10 year disaster Russia conducted in Afghanistan to support a Communist ruler, shows how they made mistakes similar to those they are making in Ukraine. This included frequent killing of women and children, rape, torture, and other crimes against humanity. The link has almost 500 references for documentation. Soon after they left, the Communist Afghan ruler was captured, tortured, and executed by the Taliban. I doubt the current ruler(s) in Russia you support will exercise such good sense.

The bridge they ran away across was a land one rather than air. The date was February 15, 1989. 47 years have passed since the fall of Saigon, and the USA is still here. The USSR lasted barely two after their troops left Afghanistan with their tails between their legs...

History repeats itself yet again. Greek soldiers threw rocks at Italian invaders in WW2 and used them against, you guessed it...Putin is the Mussolini of our times lol...
