Man Accused of Starving Dogs Tried to Drink Detergent to Avoid Jail: Police
Newsweek ^ | September 16, 2022 | Sara Santora

A man in Brevard County, Florida, was arrested earlier this month after being accused of "intentionally" starving his dogs, Katie and Darcy.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in a press conference that the man, Joseph Farkas, drank liquid detergent when police arrived in an attempt to "avoid jail," but the plot was unsuccessful. He was arrested and charged with two counts of felony animal cruelty and two counts of unlawful confinement.

According to the Law Office of Roger P. Foley, a Florida-based law firm, there are "two types of animal cruelty" in Florida—misdemeanor and felony animal cruelty.

"The main difference between the two is the misdemeanor animal cruelty involves an isolated event while felony animal cruelty is ongoing pain and suffering," the law firm said.

Misdemeanor animal cruelty is punishable by up to one year in jail, a maximum fine of $5,000, or both. Felony animal cruelty, meanwhile, is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Additionally, a person found to have "intentionally tortured [an] animal" must pay a minimum fine of $2,500 and undergo psychological counseling or complete an anger management course.

Under Florida Law, a person convicted of either crime may also be prohibited from owning, keeping or having custody of any animal for "a period of time determined by the court."

Ivey told the press that if he has "anything to do with it," Farkas won't be allowed to own a pet again.

” The dogs also experienced “mental anguish” from being forced to stare at a bag of unopened dog food while being starved.”

Molten lead.

I will never understand how cruel people can be to dogs. As dark as my mind gets about some people should be deaded for human on human crimes, I just cannot understand neglecting, abusing such friendly, loving, loyal, creatures as doggies.

There are only 3 things they need:
1. Water and food.
2. Shelter when needed.
3. Love and attention from their humans.

Yes, I'm a member of the ASPCA. No, I'm not into all animals, but c'mon dogs?...they give so much affection at such little cost. Our Chi-Chi is the joy of our life as we watch TV with her nestled up in her couch section. For no reason, she will just reach over with a quick kiss for my wife or myself and then settle back down in her spot.

I would give my life for Lola before many human beings.

Dogs have sensitive noses, so they could probably smell the food through the bag. And they’re not dumb, so they probably knew what the image of dog food in a bowl on the bag represented.

Lead in projectile form from a gun would probably be too merciful.

Plugging this bastard would be way too good for him, but I’d sure like to.

Read the headline, thought “sounds like Florida man to me“.

Read the first line of the story.

Eureka!

"Dogs have sensitive noses, so they could probably smell the food through the bag."

Of course they could. Scientists believe Dogs have 10,000 to 100,000 times the smell of humans. This was just plain old-fashioned torture. The man should be bull-whipped, and I would do it.

I can’t bear thinking of this kind of thing. Abuse of animals like this seems like it’s own unspeakable category of vicious evil.

You know they could.

My dogs can even tell what flavor of canned food is in different cans, based on the labels, I reckon.

To have to lay there starving with food in sight is pure tortures of the damned.

Why they stopped him from drinking the detergent is beyond me.

I’d had given him a funnel to hurry it along.

I don’t know, either.

My beloved boy Hrafi has osteosarcoma and I have sold nearly everything I have of any value, begged for donations and done without necessities for myself, all for the love in his eyes.

Despite 9 months of “cutting edge vet care”, he is at the point where the leg has to go.

His lungs are clear, he’s happy and has a great appetite so now I face the sorrow of amputation to help him live his best life, anyway.

I will keep going until I have nothing left, all for the love of my dog.

This kind of crap just guts me.

Some of us give all for our dogs and others are soulless and cruel to them.

/off on today’s crying jag, now

:’(
