Lindsey Graham says he’s ‘confident’ Americans would support national abortion ban

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Sunday expressed confidence that the public would support his 15-week federal abortion ban proposal but acknowledged it does not have the votes to pass the Senate.

“I’m pro-life, even in an election year,” Graham told “Fox News Sunday” anchor Shannon Bream.

“I am confident the American people would accept a national ban on abortion at 15 weeks,” Graham said. “And to those who suggest that being pro-life is losing politics, I reject that.”

The South Carolina Republican on Tuesday introduced a bill that would prohibit abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy nationwide, carving out exceptions for rape, incest and when the mother’s life is in danger.

The move has attracted criticism from some in his own party, who expressed a desire to leave abortion legislation to states after the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in June.

Placing a time limit on abortions is not at all the same thing as a total prohibition on abortion.

“Safe, rare, and legal” was how the whole abortion concept was sold to America in the beginning.

There is no way abortion can be “safe” for at least 50% of the individuals involved, as the death of the fetus is a certainty. And “rare” is a haunting mockery of how common the termination of a pregnancy has become. So far as “legal” goes, the determination of the wording of the relevant law should be made on as close to the power of the people to vote upon the issue as practical, and the Federal government, far removed from the individual opinion, is much further away than state legislatures, which have far more accountability than the Federal government to the will of the people.

This is not a duty to be shuffled off to bureaucrats, or the judiciary, but remains a power that is reserved to the respective states, or the people acting through their respective state legislatures.

I do not see that the setting of a limitation on the conditions of abortion by the Federal Government is in any way an actionable legislative task. The probability of this proposal becoming law in any event is very low, given the uncertain likelihood that any kind of compromise could ever be worked out that would gain the approval of Democrat Socialists, who would insist on no limitations at all, and Constitutional MAGA Republican, for whom the proposed bill flies directly in the face of the Dodd decision, returning the power of determination of laws concerning abortion to the respective state legislatures.

Graham’s national abortion ban would work as long as Republicans control Congress and the White House. Lose both of them and Democrats can just as easily enact a complete legalization of abortion in all 50 states. Then what?

“this fool is trying to lose the midterms for the GOP!”

Likely why the supremes made the decision and when they made it.

Someone needs to tell Linda this to his face, on camera.

We’ve spent 50 years trying to steer the nation back towards the Constitution and in just a few TV appearances this clown undoes everything.

That’s what I think as well. He’s very loud about it too. Why isn’t he loud about everything else that’s a problem?

It has no basis in the constitution, and the idea at this juncture is politically tone deaf. Where the constitution is silent, fedgov has no business intervening. That’s the plain meaning of the 10th amendment.

It is also supplying voltage to the dem lightning rod over the issue - which makes me wonder if Graham is deliberately trying to motivate dem voters to vote against republicans.

Yes, this is Lindsey Graham’s effort to thwart MAGA Republicans, which he knows are at the threshold of victory. Here’s the proof:

When has Lindsey Graham ever really been vocal, or been known to be vocal, about abortion? And yet, suddenly he is willing to stand at the forefront of a national abortion debate, that just happens to energize the knuckle-dragging, low-info voters. Strange isn’t it. THere is absolutely nothing on the national ballot. The only groups that want to nationalize this debate in advance of the mid-terms are the kook Democrats, and apparently Lindsey Graham.

No, this is way beyond coincidental. Graham is McCain’s deep state brother, and he is acting in this capacity to aid his deep state masters. Remember it was McCain who was all too willing to pass along the fake dossier in the effort to frame Trump with Russia.

SCOTUS has already ruled that this is not the federal government’s business. Shut up Lindsey.

Honest question: Do you think GOP candidates will do something like pledge to keep “a woman’s right to choose” or protections for rape, incest and ectopic or miscarriage or other danger to the mother? Like the old lockbox pledge to not steal from Social Security. RINOs may be attracted to that.

A lot of places seem to have women energized to vote against anyone in the GOP. Michigan’s horrendous pro-abortion Proposition 3 got on the ballot with around 700,000 petition signers for 393,000 required. Ads attacking GOP’s Tudor Dixon against Gov.Whitmer simply state she is pro-life without exceptions——and she is now 14% behind.

Only if the citizens get to vote on it,

Not happening if only the bought and paid for “Representatives” get to vote on it.

.
And Blame Trump.

The Republicans were happy to spend Trillions with Biden. It was a spending orgy, but on the eve of the Election, Mitch McConnell couldn’t bring himself to approve $2,000 checks.. He very publicly disagreed with the Republican President on the Eve of the Election, to allow Joe to say, well cut you the Checks.

Only one reason to do that.
