‘Gross incompetence’: Russian bid to control Ukrainian airspace fails spectacularly, strategists say
The Washington Times ^ | September 27, 2022 | Ben Wolfgang

...said retired Air Force Gen. David Deptula. “In fact, they don’t have the same air doctrine as the West, they don’t have the same level of training, they suffer from gross incompetence and poor leadership..."...In some cases, Russian jets appear reluctant to enter Ukrainian airspace at all...a lot of what they’ve done is they stay in Russian airspace and they fire into Ukraine with long-range missiles,” the U.S. airpower strategist told The Times. “There is a sense they’re avoiding being shot at by staying in their friendly territory and using their weapons capabilities” at longer range.

And don’t forget that our pilots are much more proficient in pronoun use.

Paywall.

You’d think it would be easy. Russia’s next door. But the Ukraine has western(US) anti-aircraft weapons. More sophisticated than we know. Russia’s not stupid unless you account for the invasion.

Er. That’s what they are supposed to do. That’s why they develop stand off weapons. I’d expect the USAF to do the same thing when it can.

Then there’s Afghanistan. Didn’t they learn from that? We didn’t.

For that reason alone we should hope they continue to pay a high price for their stupidity. Putin’s threat to up the ante should not scare us. It should scare their lieutenants as their families could easily be tracked down.

"Paywall."

My browser doesn't allow JavaScript by default, so there was no paywall for me. ;)

They certainly aren’t losing. I see you had to call in backup, because you have no clue as to what is even happening there.

“There is a sense they’re avoiding being shot at by staying in their friendly territory and using their weapons capabilities” at longer range.

That’s the whole point of over-the-horizon weapons. Why would you get closer than you need?

I didn’t call up back up. I stand on my own.

What Putin is doing is moronic.

Again, where is the winning?

Why are hundreds of thousands of Russians escaping Putin’s draft?

Our U.S. Air Force will bring support wherever it’s needed, and fear won’t get in the way.

What the US would do first is SEAD - Suppression of Enemy Air Defense. That is, identification and destruction of SAM systems, radars, HQs, data links. This would be done with very high tech and expensive assets that Russia certainly hasnt got, or they dont have in anything like the same quality.

And then the US would apply these SEAD assets constantly while over enemy airspace and in range of their SAMs.

I cant blame this lack on the part of the Russians entirely on mismanagement, as these SEAD-oriented assets (like the whole “stealth” thing), are extremely expensive to develop.

USAF is flying and dropping $20k JDAMs. All Russia can do is shoot $6 million cruise missiles for the same effect.

There are a lot of problems working as the Russians do.

One is that they are mainly limited to static or relatively static targets (on the ground). They cant use short reaction time or short travel time weapons, they cant use on-aircraft targeting like FLIR pods, they cant use laser-guided weapons systems for interdiction, and rarely for tactical use, etc. US aircraft can be on call to immediately attack transient targets like a ferry, a truck column, a train.

Another is inability to drop massive quantities of munitions. Under the conditions the US strives to create one US aircraft can drop many times as much explosive on a target (or a lot of targets) using JDAMs from above 15,000 feet over a target than a Russian can from 150 km away. And a 2000lb JDAM is much cheaper than any missile.

Etc etc. It is a very big deal.

And it appears that Russia is unwilling to commit stealth aircraft (if they actually have any) and are incapable of precision targeting of Ukraine’s air defenses.

Why are hundreds of thousands of Russians escaping Putin’s draft?

Because they are idiots. Putin isn't drafting anyone. He is calling up reserve military only. But then you wouldn't know that because that is not what our media tells their viewers.

Again, where is the winning?

The winning is in the referendums, which changes the entire landscape in many aspects, as I already told you. Apparently you do not understand the logic behind this move, which is why you call it moronic. It now makes the land they are protecting as Russia land. You see they don't care what we think, just like the fascist Democrats do not care what the Republicans and their supporters think.. If the U.S. & NATO start sending in military personnel, the war expands significantly.

I didn’t call up back up. I stand on my own.

Yet that is exactly what you did:

Why does he need reserves? Why don’t the reserves want to fight Putin’s War on Ukraine? The Putin War on Ukraine should be done with. How are those supply chains going to work in the dead of winter? They didn’t work so well in summer.

Where is the winning?

There are more than a million reservists in the Russian military. Ukraine has them as well, but they were already called into duty a while ago. Ukraine has suffered far greater losses, personnel wise, than has Russia.

Russia has the ability to produce its own weapons and ammo. Ukraine has to get them from others, namely the U.S. & NATO, and a little, very little, from the EU. Problem there is both NATO & the U.S. military are now running low and are actually supplying the Ukraine military with weapons our military is using. Whoa, so we are becoming defenseless because of this conflict. Another issue, is we rely heavily upon Russia and China for our ammo. Not only a strategic blunder, but bordering on treasonous as well.

Beginning to sound like a win win for Russia, from where I sit.

Your problem is that your heart is in the right place, but you have left your brain out of thinking this conflict through, and what the real ramifications are for our country.

I am not rooting for a Russia win here, I am looking for a way out regarding our involvement in this conflict. Ukraine is not winning this thing. I'll bet if the Ukrainian people could vote on Zelenskyy they would vote him out by a landslide.

Let me ask you, why is this war even happening? Let's see if you actually know the why here.
