Vladimir Putin faced severe embarrassment when Ukrainian soldiers liberated the key eastern city of Lyman, raising the blue and yellow national flag above its entrance sign, hours after Russia’s president announced that the area was Moscow’s “for ever”.
Ukraine’s armed forces said they had entirely surrounded the city, trapping thousands of Russian soldiers inside. The governor of Luhansk province, Serhiy Haidai, said the besieged troops had begged on Friday to be allowed to leave Lyman. Their commanders refused, he claimed.
With no way out, the Russians could either surrender, try to escape or die together, Haidai said.
An attempt by the Russian army to relieve the city was under way, but it was unlikely it would succeed, he said. “A colossal grouping” of up to 5,000 enemy soldiers was facing defeat, he added.
Russian military bloggers reported that Ukrainian servicemen had entered the centre of the city, and were handing out food to residents. Shelling and small arms fire had apparently stopped.

If taking a deserted town that had an occupancy of less than 15000+/- people, defended by roughly 500+/- LPR/DPR MILITIA and irregulars counts as a ‘big win’ for Ukraine and NATO, then Ukraine and NATO are doomed.

With this victory, NATO is on the cusp of conquering all of Luhansk. Donetsk will fall next. Russia has lost.

He can simply hold another pompous ceremony in his palace, and sign another diktat that the Ukrainian forces now controlling Lyman are to be considered Russian, and therefore it is he that has won.
