California becomes first state to ban plastic produce bags

Plastic produce bags will soon be a thing of the past for California grocery shoppers.

The state will effectively ban plastic produce bags from supermarkets after a new bill, SB 1046, was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on Sept. 30

Alternatively, stores must replace the bags with either paper bags or compostable bags, according to the bill.

California will be the first state in the nation to outlaw the produce bags after banning single-use checkout bags from supermarkets, pharmacies and convenience stores back in 2016.

The ban will take effect starting January 1, 2025.

Why not just ban toilet paper too? These ideas are just completely stupid.

Maybe they should ban pooping on the sidewalks instead.

NY banned plastic carry out bags from registers; but not the bags you put loose produce in or that you can get from the meat department.

They probably were the first to ban paper also. Just a guess.

No idea how expensive it is. What is it made of? How much of it is "BS"?

I use “single use” plastic bags to dispose of coffee grounds, spoiled vegetables, cat vomit and any number of undesirables.

Never put a good bag into the trash without something in it!

Wasn’t it the CA enviro-a-hoes that took away paper grocery bags and forced plastic bags on us in the first place?

Mr mm had gotten some allegedly compostable straws that came with something he bought.

We threw them in the compost bin last year to see what would happen.

Just last month, I used the compost from that bin and pulled out completely intact straws. And threw them in the trash.

I wish they’d make up their minds. They got rid of paper bags to start with because they didn’t want so many Dead Trees.

Yep. Just because it has the label on it doesn't mean it's legit.

My paper refuse go in a plastic grocery bag. Easier to carry multiple ones to the burn barrel

We in California will find a way around this latest imposition by the Governor, the same way we found a way to keep our plastic bags in the grocery store by adding a 5 cent “courtesy fee”. This little power struggle will not stop us from conducting business or shopping.

hahahah I remember plastic bags were supposed to save the trees along with the spotted owl and three toed salamander. Now back to the pulp mills.

Maybe Cartelfornia will start cutting all that underbrush in forests and it’ll work? Environmentalists will never be happy nor do the right thing

I think it’s a great idea……plastic bags are unnecessary….paper is better.

First question that popped into my mind about “compostable” bags is, would the CA authority that certifies organic farms still certify if the farm composts those bags?

I would compost a generic brown paper bag before I put something the gooberment says is compostable in my garden.
