Apple CEO Tim Cook on Hate Speech (4 years ago): 'You Have No Place on Our Platform'
Macrumors ^ | December 3, 2018 | Juli Clover

Apple CEO Tim Cook this afternoon accepted the Anti-Defamation League's inaugural Courage Against Hate Award at the Never is Now Summit on Anti-Semitism and Hate, where he gave a keynote speech that had a strong message for those seeking to spread hate on Apple's platform.

"We only have one message for those who seek to push hate, division, and violence, Cook said. "You have no place on our platform. You have no home here."

Cook went on to say that this is a longtime view of Apple's, and he pointed out the company's removal of Infowars content earlier this year. Apple, he said, is not afraid to say that its values drive its curation decisions.

From the earliest days of iTunes to Apple Music today, we have always prohibited music with a message of white supremacy. Why? Because it's the right thing to do.

And as we showed this year, we won't give a platform to violent conspiracy theorists on the App Store. Why? Because it's the right thing to do.

My friends, if we can't be clear on moral questions like these, then we've got big problems. At Apple, we are not afraid to say that our values drive our curation decisions. And why should we be? Doing what's right, creating experiences free from violence and hate, experiences that empower creativity and new ideas is what our customers want us to do.

Technology should be about human attention. It should be about optimism. And we believe the future should belong to those who use technology to build a better, more inclusive, and more hopeful world.

After all, history is full of examples of what can happen when those with power, and those who ought to have good judgement, instead look the other way. I believe the most sacred thing that each of us is given is our judgement. Our morality. Our own innate desire to separate right from wrong. Choosing to set that responsibility aside at a moment of trial is a sin. We as individuals have the power to know and feel and act and we ought to use it.

According to Cook, while Apple is a technology company, its employees "never forget" that the devices they design are imagined by human minds, built by human hands, and are meant to improve human lives.

I sometimes say that I worry less about computers that think like people and more about people that think like computers. Without values or compassion, without concern for consequences. And so we try to stay rooted and to keep our devices connected to the humanity that makes us us.

Cook's full speech at the Never is Now Summit was made available via the ADL's livestream of the event. The livestream is now offline, but we'll update should the video be uploaded to the ADL's website at a later time.

This is an old article, but hints that Cook/Apple are equating Twitter with hate speech.

But Twitter is basically letting the users figure it all out for themselves. Perhaps THAT is what Apple fears...the absence of an overlord.

How ironic, for a firm using an apple with a bite out of it as its symbol.

Sorry. I’m not going to be lectured about morality or sin by (immoral sexual deviant) Tim Cook.

Sadly, his products are so superior to the other companies that you almost have to buy them. My MacBook is 12 years old. I do have a new iPhone, but my last one lasted six years! Before going with Apple MACBOOK, I used to buy Sony or some other crap, and it would always ended up being a disaster. so until the other companies up their game, apple is not going anywhere.

Hate speech today is anything you say another person doesn’t agree with.

banning ‘hate speech’ is the default and popular thing to do. Courage would be sticking to an unpopular decision.

Wiki:

On October 30, 2014 Cook publicly came out as gay in an editorial for Bloomberg Business, saying, "I'm proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me." He consulted with Anderson Cooper, who had publicly come out himself, on aspects of the statement, and cleared the timing to ensure it would not distract from business interests. Cook had been open about his sexuality "for years", and while many people at the company were aware of his sexual orientation, he sought to focus on Apple's products and customers rather than his personal life. He ended his op-ed by writing, "We pave the sunlit path toward justice together, brick by brick. This is my brick."

Cook became the first and only openly gay CEO on the Fortune 500 list. In September 2015, Cook clarified on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, "Where I valued my privacy significantly, I felt that I was valuing it too far above what I could do for other people, so I wanted to tell everyone my truth." In October 2019, he talked about the decision and remarked on how it was thanks to LGBTQ people who had fought for their rights before him that paved the way for his success, and that he needed to let younger generations know that—in a coding analogy—he saw being gay as a feature his life had to offer rather than any problem. He hoped his openness could help LGBTQ youth dealing with homelessness and suicide hope that their situation could get better.

Doesn't sounds like he would be a big fan of Matt Walsh or LibsOfTikTok on Twitter.

“We only have one message for those who seek to push hate, division, and violence, Cook said.”

Not just hate speech, but anything said that causes “division.”

Now that is intolerance, brother.

Apple is a Chinese Communist Corporation.
They use their power to restrict free speech or anything that criticizes the CCP.

I will never buy any of their products. I have never owned any of their products including the smart phones.

Don’t forget that Cook is queer. Therefore, anyone who says, “I don’t want my son molested by a drag queen” is engaging in hate speech. Stop buying and using Apple products or you are supporting a hard-left, homosexual worldview.

“Twitter is basically letting the users figure it all out for themselves. Perhaps THAT is what Apple fears...the absence of an overlord.”

True.

Censorship has a bad name, but the original censors held what were usually elected positions and prohibited things like profiteering from or publicly exhibiting expressions that were indecent or obscene, according to community standards.

The biggest problem with censorship is when it is carried out in a top-down fashion rather than driven by community values.

Free Republic is the perfect example. People come here voluntarily because of similar interests and shared values and beliefs. If someone abuses the platform we have the “Abuse” button and admin/moderators who can remedy offending “speech”.

All social media platforms should follow this approach. Larger platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube could allow users to form their own communities and values.

What the left fears is people forming communities around beliefs and values the left connot dictate or control.
