Brittney Griner’s release from a Russian penal colony Thursday as part of a prisoner swap for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout was met with widespread celebration.

No tickertape parades, so far as I can see.

And yet, we have tweets proliferating across social media accusing Griner of disrespecting the American flag (she didn’t) or kneeling during the national anthem (also not true).

She stayed in the locker room while the anthem was being played (other players did, too), and said she didn't want it to be played at Phoenix WNBA games. So apparently no kneeling, but that's not the whole story.
