Thousands of Americans are still in the midst of holiday travel woes following a winter storm rocking the United States leading up to Christmas weekend, but Southwest Airlines is under fire for having one of the highest volumes of cancellations.
Thousands of flights were delayed or canceled across the country leading up to Christmas, and the trend is still not over.

Southwest may have more cancellations because more of the flights are routed through places like Midway and BWI rather than Atlanta or Dallas.
It’s winter. Happens every year. Get over it, bucko!
Not one airline advertises on FOX News... We need to mention that to them...
I flew 95% Southwest on about a thousand flights prior to retirement. Very happy with that airline.
I guess they’d prefer flying on planes that crash due to weather.
Some of the airports seeing the biggest issue are Denver, Las Vegas, Chicago Midway, Baltimore/Washington, and Dallas Love Field where Southwest operates.
My son and his fiance were coming to Nashville from Dallas on Southwest. Their plane was coming from LaGuardia to Hobby to Dallas. It was 3.5 hours late to Houston and never left there as there were no departure slots available. We watched on FlightAware for over an hour scheduled to depart in 4 minutes then delayed 4 minutes over and over.
If an airline cancels flights due to icky weather, that's prudent decision-making in the interest of safety.
many people today are totally disconnected from reality ...
Thatβs all great to note, but how many of these same poor airlines would refund people for cancelling?
Probably not many.
So you get a Sophieβs Choice of risky ride, or out a few hundred.
I still think that entire practice is highway robbery. All the wrong things are regulated if you ask me.
As a retired Boeing Engineer that used to test aircraft. There are times when it plainly is not safe to fly so, you don’t.
If an airline hubs through those bad areas then that is life.
Not their fault.
Would get on a plane that had a 1% chance of crashing?
Last time I checked Southwest was the only airline to give its travelers two free pieces of luggage. Could this be their undoing.
When you use another airline you downsize to maybe take one checked (paid for) piece of luggage. Or shove stuff in a carry on.
It seems ironic the airlines that charge an arm and a leg for baggage, don’t have the luggage issue from all the weather delays?
“There are times when it plainly is not safe to fly.” True.
Circumspection is the activity of watching for possible dangers. Professionals in the airline and space industries have tons of experience with circumspection.
Oh, poor babies...wwaaahhhh...would you rather CRASH because of weather??? Sheesh.
I wonder how many would be complaining if they didnt cancel flights and they all died in crashes? fkn idiots...
And what about the safety of the other passengers? The flights are canceled because of the risk of an air accident. The same people who wanted the whole country locked down out of an abundance of caution, just to keep a nasty cold from spreading, these are the people that want you to get in an airplane under unsafe conditions. Where is the abundance of caution?
I’d rather spend a year in an airport terminal than die in an airplane crash.
...and is why I prefer to drive Route 10 for 2 days than risk the chaos of air travel.
