Microsoft is preparing to axe thousands of jobs in the latest move by one of the world's biggest technology companies to reduce its workforce in the face of a slowing global economy.
Sky News has learnt that the US software giant could announce plans to cull a significant number of posts around the world within a matter of days.
Microsoft, which employs more than 220,000 people, including 6,000 in the UK, is said to be contemplating cutting roughly 5% of its workforce, which if accurate would equate to approximately 11,000 jobs.
That figure could not be verified on Tuesday evening, and one analyst suggested that Wall Street would be surprised if the figure was not higher than that.
It was also unclear whether or how many UK-based positions might be affected.
The company, which has placed huge bets on the growth of cloud computing and now has a market value of $1.78tn, is due to report second-quarter earnings next week.
If finalised, an announcement about headcount reductions is likely to come before Satya Nadella, Microsoft's chairman and chief executive, updates investors on its financial performance on January 24.

There should be a new law that H-1B visa employees are fired first!!!!
I can’t remember the last time I bought any M$ software or services.
I do still use some M$ s/w though.
And will they start with H1B? Companies should be required to shed H1B workers before laying off or firing Americans.
msft is a very different company than it was 25 years ago.
Dems: Let them learn to code.
Unemployed: We’ve been there, done that.
Here’s a swipe against the world of technology (I’m a Luddite):
At the dying brick and mortar Border’s bookstore chain somebody had the idea near the last days of the clearance sales to put up a sign I saw on the out of service rest rooms:
Rest Rooms Closed.
Try the Internet.
Or hardware.
Every day I do use a M$ optical mouse. It still works GREAT.
Yep
Microsoft is probably in the best position out of the top tech firms. However, they really screwed up buying Activision-Blizzard. Awful, awful move that they overpaid for and it’s a dumpster fire too.
I read years ago that microsoft treats their employees badly. That they wear color coded badges so the full time ones know not to talk to the ‘temp’ workers even though the ‘temp’ workers work 40 hours and more. They were sued for using the ‘temp’ status when it was obvious for they were full time so they would not get benefits.
That’s very common in tech. I knew of a guy that worked at a company that had contractors and full time, and wouldn’t let the contractors eat at the pot lunch with the others.
That was when I decided to never be a contractor at a temp company even if it pays more. You’re considered trash.
Ainokea.
I use Linux.
Windows for Visio
only.
I disagree. AWS is way ahead of Microsoft in cloud services and Google has their mobile Android platform.
Microsoft is playing catch up like they always have. The only difference is that now their OS near monopoly is not nearly as useful in leveraging their products as it used to be
they got cocky when they bought Mojang AB(studio that made Minecraft) and Bethesda(which I think was overpriced for a set of iconic, but dying IP’s)
There was a lawsuit in 98-99
There was a small settlement, they converted some temps to fte.
Everyone after that got screwed cause they could only work for a few months then there were mandatory breaks in service,
Soon after it became a rotating h1b sweatshop, Then to be fair and inclusive they opened source code and contract offices in china
“H1B” first! Agreed 100%
There go thousands of employees out the Window[s].
Not FIFO?
I wonder how many Americans will now be stuck, unemployed, overseas?
Basically a foreign-oriented and managed company...
Would not be surprised if every person laid off was an American citizen...
Of their 220,000 employees, be interesting to know how many are not U.S. citizens...
