Why gas stoves matter to the climate – and the gas industry: Keeping them means homes will use gas for heating too
Yahoo! News ^ | January 18, 2023 | By Daniel Cohan

Gas stoves are a leading source of hazardous indoor air pollution, but they emit only a tiny share of the greenhouse gases that warm the climate. Why, then, have they assumed such a heated role in climate politics?

This skirmish may seem like a tempest in a teapot, but it reveals important contours of the battlefield on which climate politics are waged. As I explain in my book, “gas stoves matter to climate and to the gas industry because they serve as gateway appliances to the dominant residential uses of natural gas: heating and hot water.

Installing more-efficient furnaces, better insulation and smart thermostats are helpful first steps, but getting close to zero will require switching to electricity for space heating and water heating. In the U.S., 46% of homes use natural gas as their main source of heat, 40% use electricity, 10% use other fuels such as heating oil or propane, and 4% are unheated. For water heating, the percentages are 47% gas, 47% electricity and 6% other fuels.

Today, electric and gas heating have similar carbon footprints, since roughly 60% of U.S. electricity is generated from fossil fuels and many homes use inefficient electric resistance heaters. But the emissions intensity of electricity is rapidly declining as coal plants close and solar and wind power expands.

Homes built today will endure far beyond Biden’s 2050 net-zero target. And the longer the gas-is-better myth persists, the harder it will be to fully electrify new homes from the start. As I see it, if “cooking with gas” keeps us tethering new homes to natural gas grids for decades to come, our health, climate and wallets will pay the price.

Is it just me or does it seem that the progressive eco alarmists won’t be satisfied until they push pull force us to become Luddites. Of course with the exception of themselves.

Tough to believe the Nazis really want to outlaw gas ovens.

If they were actually concerned about climate, efforts should be directed to India and China. Banning gas stoves is relatively just pissing in the wind.

Yes, let’s switch entirely over to electricity - the rolling blackouts we experience in California when it’s over 100 degrees are absolutely wonderful and “climate neutral.”

The electrical grid can barely hold up demand now - and I know of no plans to upgrade the system. I wonder why I keep getting alerts from my city during the frequent heat waves we have to NOT plug in EVs - sometimes several alerts a day.

The new CONgress should just ban all taxpayer funds from being used for acquiring Natural Gas or any product that uses it.

let’s see how it works

Yep. They can shut off electricity remotely, but they have to come on site to shut off gas to your house. Electricity is a button click and gas is an onsite technician.

Don’t eff’n tell me how to heat, cook or dry clothes. I heat my home and water with gas. I cook with gas. I bake with electricity. I dry my clothes with electricity. Those are they way I like to do things and they work for me. There are cases when electricity is superior to gas and gas is superior to electricity. It’s called freedom. If they don’t like it, then they can personally cut CO2 emissions by covering their heads with a plastic bag and duct tapping it around their necks.

I value freedom over their climate change fantasies and irrational fears.

First they came for gas stoves,.......

Of course gas furnaces and gas hot water heaters were next on the list. And I’ll bet gas dryers are, too.

Who couldn’t see that one coming?

In Northern Virginia it’s very common for houses to have gas furnaces for heat, and an electric stove.

It seems that gas stoves cost more than electric ones, and the builders aim to build the cheapest house possible.

Eliminate the humans and the problem is half solved.

The vax was designed to do exactly that.

From Dr. Mercola:

With every passing day, the list of people suffering tragic consequences from the COVID mRNA shots grows longer. As of December 23, 2022, the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) had received 33,334 reports of post-jab deaths, 26,045 cases of myocarditis and 15,970 heart attacks.

Many of these people and their stories have remained hidden from public view as social media have universally censored these stories. As a result, people who only read mainstream media are largely unaware of the damage being done. However, there is a population of people whose injuries and deaths have been far more public.

Over the past two years (2021 through 2022), more than 1,6502,3,4,5,6,7 professional and amateur athletes have collapsed due to cardiac events and 1,1488 of them proved fatal. https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2023/01/16/are-athletes-dropping-dead-covid-jab.aspx?ui=ee2f0b2e705667c993b7d7f028193e1ab78f8c181719f132ac72b4bf9ed7f154&sd=20220128&cid_source=dnl&cid_medium=email&cid_content=art1HL&cid=20230116&cid=DM1328179&bid=1696203390

Electrical heating is generally more expensive than gas, especially in colder climates.

Electric heat also takes longer to heat a home and forced air electric heat does not provide the same temps and comfort (warmth) of gas forced air. A high efficiency gas furnace will cost more initially than electric but in lifespan costs it is much cheaper and lasts usually around 10 years longer than a typical electric furnace.

"...Eliminate the humans..."

.

Right.
The 2050 net-zero target will probably require that nuclear weapons be used.

Lots of them.

Oh well.
This was a fairly decent purgatory while it lasted...
