Newsom gets big win: California Senate approves first-of-its-kind ‘price gouging’ bill

California lawmakers voted on Thursday to advance a bill that would penalize oil companies for “price gouging” — a first-of-its-kind legislation pushed forward in recent months by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).

The SBX1-2 bill, sponsored by state Sen. Nancy Skinner (D), received the approval of the California State Senate in an Extraordinary Session convened to fast-track the legislation on Thursday morning.

The bill could head to the State Assembly as early as Monday and receive the governor’s signature shortly after that, a source familiar with the matter told The Hill.

Newsom commended the state Senate’s “quick action” following the vote, stressing that “for decades, oil companies have gotten away with ripping off California families while making record profits.”

“With this proposal, California leaders are ending the era of oil’s outsized influence and holding them accountable,” the California governor said in a statement.

That’s probably the fastest way to get rid of gas vehicles.

Make it economically impossible to sell gas in the state.

Damn commies.

Commifornia .

Private companies bring products to the market. You can shop around for better deals, you can search for alternatives. You can elect not to buy at all.

Governments, on the other hand, impose their taxes on you. You have little choice in the matter. Pay them or go to jail.

Who's doing the 'gouging'?

Simple solution - stop selling oil products in California.

Ignoring economic reality apparently is the key to success in politics, especially in California.

By the time I saved enough money to move ( decade at least ) I won’t be able to get the gas TO move.

They’ve got their iron curtain with this for most Californians.

It sounds like they are going to cap the refineries production.

Seems, like the refineries would do well to stop producing Ca emissions standards fuel and produce only standard (non CA approved blends).

Ca wants them to stop selling fuel? Give them what they want.

About half of California’s electricity generation is powered by natural gas. Oil companies should refuse to ship their products to California. Problem solved.

That is what they want.

They’ll tell us to ride the electric bus, buy an E.v. or walk.

I wouldn’t own a ronson even if I could afford one.

OK, so they will cut out the sale of gas in the state, pushing everyone to either leave, or buy an electric car. THEN, they’ll complain about the loss of revenue from the gas tax, and they’ll have to implement “per mile driven” taxes. In the end? No one will be able to afford to go anywhere. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
