The owner of a Rivian R1S electric SUV was overjoyed to have his dream electric vehicle after waiting for years. But after owning the car for just days, it got stuck in the snow and immobilized by a safety feature, leading to a $2,100 bill to transport it to a repair facility.

Business Insider reports that a recent incident involving an owner of a Rivian R1S has forced the maker of the electric vehicles to examine its customer service more carefully and think about making changes to improve the user experience. The owner of an R1S truck, Chase Merrill, encountered a difficult situation when his electric SUV got stuck in deep snow and a safety feature rendered it immobile.

EVs are not reliable when it is too cold. And neither are they reliable when it is too hot. It's a Goldilocks and the Three Bears type of vehicle. The temperature has to be just right.

“Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s senior vice president of software development, acknowledged the unfortunate incident, telling Insider, “There was an unfortunate cascade of events and edge cases that led to this situation. But we take this feedback as a gift. It’s great input for us to improve the product.””

_____

I doubt think it can be called a “gift” unless it was freely given. It cost the guy over $2,000, in addition to his time and trouble.

However, when the car got stuck in 2.5 feet of snow, his love affair with the truck promptly ended.

The guy's an idiot.

“and some have made alternative plans to buy other electric cars.”

They’re not coming to the correct conclusion.

Georgia’s Governor Kemp cut a deal with Rivian giving them major tax breaks to build a plant in a very rural area of Georgia. The locals are against the plant and have tried to stop it from proceeding. So far, I believe they have lost all their lawsuits in trying stop it.

https://reason.com/2022/12/28/free-market-think-tank-names-georgia-electric-vehicle-plant-the-worst-economic-development-deal-of-2022/

“The Center for Economic Accountability (CEA) is a nonpartisan think tank that opposes corporate welfare. Each December since its founding in 2018, the CEA names the “Worst Economic Development Deal of the Year.” And in a year with three times as many projects with billion-dollar state development subsidies as the year before, an electric vehicle (E.V.) factory in Georgia outran the competition.”

“It’s great input for us to improve the product.”

Sheesh, they should pay the guy for being an unwitting beta tester. He thought he was getting a fully debugged product fit for purpose.

Ha! If the buyer thought that, he’s an idiot. This beta test program is very costly for owners buying the latest hot status symbol. Let that be a lesson to everybody!

If global warming causes your EV to fail in the snow ... you might be a Democrat. LOL

“I had seen all the Rivian marketing campaigns with the cars just eating through the snow, so it was kind of like, man, this is disappointing.”

Rivian needs to change those ads, to show the snow eating the Rivians. That'll get people to buy them. No truth in advertising.

So I guess sightings of Rivians equipped with snowplows will be rare.

I’d hesitate to try 2.5 feet of snow with my (ICE) F-250, even with chains. But if I did get stuck, using a shovel would cost me a lot less than $2,100.

I thought those things were all wheel drive. A good set of studded snow tire might have helped.
