When seconds counts, the police are only minutes away.

That’s not a knock on the police, it’s just a fact since there are only so many on shift and scattered all over town.

Yeah...the armed teacher scheme kinda breaks down when the green-haired gender-benders are getting Ed degrees.

Totally hardened schools are probably quite unnecessary - but might be a good idea.

There should be armed people among the school staff, and the windows should be such that bullets just punch little holes instead of collapsing when shot. There are films which can be added afterwards to do that.

The Nashville shooting happened at a private Christian school. It's not a public school. Certainly armed guards are a possibility. A bit odd at a church, but clearly the school was assessed as a soft target. The shooter selected the softest target. I would expect a similar thought process will occur in target selection by future shooters. The softest target will get hit.

If her parents didn’t think she should own guns and she was living at home, even under treatment for an emotional disorder, clearly this was avoidable.

As I understand, her parents, including her gun-activist mother, were unaware of her having firearms.

Except in the memphis case it was a church private school.

My oldest son had 4 open heart surgeries, a dual lead pacemaker and a raging case of ADD. He was better read than most literature graduate students and had almost eidetic imagery recall of everything he read. What he lacked was based "executive functioning". He worked at Deseret Industries and Sears. His attention deficit disorder made driving a car too dangerous, so he walked everywhere. He lived at home until age 32 when a dose of azithromycin delivered a sudden cardiac death. His mom found him in the morning after her graveyard shift as a police/fire/EMS dispatcher.

The point of sharing that info is that many parents have an adult child at home who is incapable of living independently.

Arm every kid. Is it not his right to defend himself instead of pleading don’t hurt me then bleeding out? Even BB guns. My neighbors fear BB guns.

Re #12. This shooting was not at a public school. It was however carried out by a nut job. If there is to be gun control, LGTBQ+ crowds must be identified as mentally ill and cannot buy firearms.

Secure the entrances. It does no good to just lock the doors if you can break a window to get in. All these recent school shooting have one thing in common. The shooters easily accessed the building. They didn’t shoot there way in, the shooting didn’t start until they were inside. How hard is this?

Oh my. I am so very sorry about your son. That is heartbreaking.

We must have been typing at the same time. I wrote most of this, went to do something else, then posted this on the other thread before seeing your post:

I’m glad someone else noted this little factoid. It was not a child, she was an adult. She was a messed up mental liberal clusterfork. I had been discharged honorably from both the Army and USAF when I was 28 and was in a post doctoral program in college.

You do realize the school in Nashville is not a public school, right? It’s a private Christian school.

See posts #36 and #43. Audrey was on the autism spectrum. I had long since graduated college and climbed in my profession by age 28, married and, like you, doing fine on my own. But neither you or I had autism.

I'm well aware of the challenges of having an adult child in my home who couldn't function independently. I was fortunate that he didn't have a deceitful bone in his body. He was part of the Sunday School leadership at church and his steel trap memory developed nearly 400 friends in our new home town. Most of them came to his memorial. It was a real revelation. A few spoke at his memorial and stated that his friendship is what prevented them from committing suicide.

Agree with resistant windows... at least on the first floor. And I totally agree with trained guard teachers. Perhaps some could be responsible for just 3 or 4 teaching hours in the middle of the day and for pulling guard duties at the beginning and end of days.

This would be a large group when all the public schools in the USA are considered, but they wouldn’t be national. They’d be local and under local authority. No need to add another layer of bureaucracy. Those managing one or 2 guards now, and easily handle 6 - 8 doing similar tasks.

It would provide another means of employment, and it would protect what I consider extremely valuable people, our children.
