I had a home in the Poconos in Pennsylvania. It had electric baseboard heat, with the primary source being a coal / wood stove built into a solid brick hearth 10'×8'x 10'. One bucket of coal heated the entire house for 12 hours. The coal ash spread on the driveway kept the vehicles from slipping. The plant beds around the driveway lived the coal ash as fertilizer. The two ton delivery of coal (locally mined) cost $160. It was a two year supply.
After a few years we kept the house but had to relocate for our jobs. The electricity bill for heat was over $400 per month with the thermostat set at 55 degrees during the winter months.
