CHARLOTTE — Passengers on a flight that was about to take off from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport on Thursday got a view that nobody wants to see when they look out the window: flames shooting from the wing.
Frankie Leggington shared video of the incident with Channel 9, adding that the plane had to go back to the terminal Thursday evening.
“We were taking off like normal when the wheels go up, you feel a little bump,” Leggington said. “Then all of a sudden, you hear an explosion.”
The video shows the airplane, an Airbus A321, going down the runway at CLT while smoke and flames are seen from the right wing.
Everyone started to panic, Leggington said.
“Nobody knows what’s happening so it’s everyone’s first instinct, is the plane is going to blow,” Leggington said. “So everyone is grabbing their bags trying to run up and run in the aisle.”
Leggington, who was sitting near an emergency exit, recorded video from her window seat.
She sent the video to other passengers.
“Everyone was trying to panic but we couldn’t go anywhere. That was the biggest scare,” passenger Claire Dundon said.
Channel 9 reached out to American Airlines Friday morning after learning of the incident. AA said in a statement, that flight 2288 to Dallas-Fort Worth reported a “mechanical issue” and safely taxied back to the gate under its own power.
AA says the plane was taken out of service for maintenance. It’s not clear what caused the fire.
No injuries were reported.
FlightRadar24 caught the path of the plane as it went down the runway and then returned to the airport.
According to flight records, the plane that caught fire had landed in Charlotte earlier Thursday after a flight from Rhode Island.
Passengers going to Dallas got on a different plane, but it was canceled because of bad weather.
The airline said it is offering compensation to those passengers.

If I'm on a plane that needs to be evacuated and there's anybody in My way worried about their DAMMED BY LUGGAGE I'm going to run them down or throw them out of the exit Without the baggage !!!
Most likely I'll be outside the Emergency Exit anyway as I try to get a Window Exit Seat for the dual purpose of 1) opening that Exit if needed, 2) for the extra legroom on those rows.

It shouldn't be too bad if everyone was just TRYING to panic. It's gets real bad when people SUCCEED at panicking. Sometimes I try real hard but cannot work up a good panic.

An option I forgot, pull their bag outta the bin and fold them in half or thirds and stuff them in place of the bag then put the bag under the seat in front.
Lots of landings and take-offs from CLT.
Sometimes stuff doesn’t work.

Times like this is when the fatties who need 2 seats are putting everyone’s lives at risk
Trying to get them out of their seat, down the aisle and through the emergency exit would be mighty time consuming

Yes there are. I grew up an Airline Kid, was flying before I could remember it but was fortunate enough to remember the mid 60’s on up and things really went downhill in the early 90’s IMO. I remember real meal service with china and real silverware, $2 cocktails in coach and free in 1st class. I assume it still is in1st. Meal choices were usually beef/chicken or fish, real veggies and decent desserts 🧁 🍮 🍨. Visiting the Flight Deck. Stewardesses giving kids the little Metal Flight Wings and were NEVER RUDE ! My1st ride on a 747 on the way back to Houston via Chicago and We took one to LAX then on to Houston just to check it out when they came out and thinking back to the DC-3 days. And the little packages of peanuts or maybe cashews if you were lucky.
But alas as most everything else, it too has gone to crap in America...
