GM to end production of electric Chevy Bolt, its first mass-market EV, later this year
CNBC ^ | 4/25/23 | Michael Wayland

– General Motors plans to stop production of its electric Chevrolet Bolt models by the end of this year, CEO Mary Barra told investors Tuesday when discussing the company’s first-quarter earnings.

The Chevy Bolt EV and EUV, a larger version of the car, make up the vast majority of the company’s electric vehicle sales to date. However, the battery cells in the cars are an older design and chemistry than the automaker’s newer electric vehicles such as the GMC Hummer and Cadillac Lyriq, which utilize GM’s Ultium architecture.

like the burning stick game, when it goes out, you’re stuck wi it

Ultium architecture? I guess the next advance will be called the Ludicrous architecture...

“An on-board electrical generation capability, using some heat source to drive a Stirling-cycle hot air engine (or even a steam engine, we don’t care), which in turn drives a generator that supplies the electrical energy to drive the wheels would appear to be one of the better engineering designs to follow.”

The idea of battery powered cars reminds me of the pie-in-the-sky ideas many top-level managers who have never done anything physical in their lives come up with. To people who know nothing anything is possible. The fact that it hasn’t been done before is due to (pick one) big gas, big oil, chemtrails. My thermodynamics class in college was taught by a genuine NASA scientist. He had us work through every possible fairy dust idea with the most generous assumptions and none of them were better for the environment than existing technologies. But scientists aren’t the people making rules, regulations and laws.

Not only won’t you be able to give an old EV away, localities will forbid their disposal. In fact, there will be massive fines levied if you abandon an EV or try to dispose of it. There could also be criminal charges filed against you for that.

I saw a photo from France of a 10-acre field full of abandoned EV’s that had been owned by a municipal government but were now useless as too expensive to refit with new batteries.

compare to a Corolla, much more room by compact car standards.

Base Price: $22,645 MSRP
Curb Weight: 2955 lb

is the Bolt dragging 700lb of battery around? ugh ...

Science and engineering professors with significant industry experience aren't worth their weight in gold.

They're much more valuable than that.

They should have stuck with the Volt. At least it is useful as a grocery getter, but not a touring or long haul vehicle. Mine still going strong and inexpensive charging with the plugin use.

That is one ugly pizza chit

As an owner of a GT350R, amen.

It's a "mustang" in name only, dreamed up by marketing dweebs trying to capitalize on the brand.

Uhm-m-m ... whats with the exotic power sources for the generator? The Toyota Hybrids are already here and have a small ICE for the generator - no new engineering miracles needed.

I’ve said this a number of times.
Other than Tesla, Americans will not buy American made EV.
The track record of GM-Ford-Chrysler of producing long lasting reliable cars is BAD.

Dead EV’s are not useless.

They can be parked on the side of roads and used as homes for the unhoused.

And that will end the concept of a personal vehicle.

New cars are pushing north of $50K. If it is valued at $0 by year five, then you have to have a 3 year note.

Good luck

As I charge up my BMW i3s REx, I talk to the other drivers
of electric cars. A lot of them ARE NOT impressed by the
availability of charging stations. Here are some other
problems with the ones that do exist.

Out of order (of the limited number of charging stations on
site, one or all may be on the fritz. At the station I’m
using now, there are three units. One has been out of
order for a week now (no end in sight).

My vehicle seems to have a worse time than most, for
connecting to the network. (Always a thrill...)

In some shopping malls, they have pretty good size body
of charging stations, but they are not always clearly
defined. You drive through the lot look for them. Even
when you find the grouping, you need to drive around to
look at what exactly is or is not available.

Some malls have allowed the charging stations to be used
as just another parking lot stall, rendering the
availability to zero percent, 100% of the open store
hours.

I do think a lot of people jumped in the line to buy
these because they either did fall for the environmental
claims, or simply wanted to try the new tech.

What will be interesting to watch now, is how many people
buy a second EV. What percent of the first time buyers
will drop out when it comes time to replace their first
EV purchase. That number will be more significant than
the continued first time buyers jumping on board.

If you can’t grab your market and hang on to it, look
out!

Newer and better technologies are coming down the line.
Some of the most negative aspects of going EV will be
addressed over time. Will they come soon enough to help?

I don’t know.

I’m not an all out EV supporter. I’m not an all out
negative person on them either. I’m not down in ICE cars.
I’m also not one of the guys who simply can’t stand to be
without an ICE engine either.

When I bought this vehicle, I wasn’t totally convinced that
Biden and company wouldn’t mismanage us into another gas
shortage. The thought of having electric and or gas
seemed like a reasoned idea.

I’m continuing to pay between 25% and 50% of what I would
have spent on my decent mileage hybrid, as it relates to
how much I would have spent to travel the same miles, so
I’m still very happy with my EV.

I’m semi-retired, and time is not as big a factor in my
life as it is for others.

My EV has handled 100% of my travel needs, for a solid
year. It has a small 2.4 gallon tank that runs a
generator to extend my miles, if I need to. The first
whole year, I never used it.

I do plan to take longer trips with this car though, and
using the generator on those longer trips is an option I
intend to utilize. This means that I will carry gas with
me in the back, and will put in a couple of more gallons
every 75 miles or so. While that’s not for everyone, it
suits me fine.

Being able to go 550 miles without powering up or buying
more gas isn’t a terrible range. The 75 mile stops and
reload won’t bother me, unless there’s a massive storm
at the time. And still, 99% of the time I’ll be using the
electric motor. This would only be on the occasional
long trip.

I get a kick out of the car. EV isn’t for everyone. If
people want one and enjoy it, great. If people want to
stay with ICE cars and enjoy them, great.

This “everyone will be in an EV and like it” regime, is
full of “stuff” on every single topic, so why should we
expect them to get this one right?

Wait a minute here. Government motors is ditching EV’s?

Mary Barra was hand picked by the ONE: Obama.
This same govt that is mandating that car makers make a certain percentage of their fleet electric?

I guess Mary can expect a middle of the night FBI raid any day now.

And car dealers won’t take them in on a trade.

These are not EV’s. The are DEV’s.
Dead end vehicles.

That seems like a pretty reasonable perspective. How long does BMW project the battery to last in the i3 and what’s the plan when it becomes unusable? Is there some kind of exchange program where BMW will do the disposal and give you a replacement for a decent price?

Also, how do heating and A/C affect your range? Does the gas engine generator run those functions or do they run off the battery?
