Heavy Cannabis Use Linked to Schizophrenia Especially among Young Men

The French psychiatrist Jacques-Joseph Moreau published a book called Hashish and Mental Illness in 1845, the same year that Scientific American brought out its first issue. In it, he explored his own experiences with the drug cannabis at the Paris-based Club des Hachichins—some of which took place alongside the likes of Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac and Charles Baudelaire. Two years earlier Moreau described the “undescribable delights” of a “marvelous substance.” But in his 1845 book, he noted in great clinical detail the similarities to psychosis when ingesting high doses.

Nearly two centuries later the possible link between cannabis use and schizophrenia continues to be intensively researched, often provoking heated debate in its wake. A study published on May 4 in the journal Psychological Medicine provides new evidence that problematic cannabis use may lead to schizophrenia, particularly for young men who are heavy users.

I knew this back in the late 60s when Cheech and Chong came out. “Don’t answer the phone!”

Anything that alters the function of the brain is going to cause problems if it is used continuously.

Yeah, James Holmes and Jared Loughner were both examples of this. In both cases the friends said they were heavy pot smokers that changed after the pot usage. I don’t know if you can still find Loughner walking around the Tucson community college he got kicked from but all you hear him say is repetitive paranoid and schizophrenic statements.

Holmes transferred from California to Colorado during his change to schizophrenia so he flew under the radar until it was too late.

Wait.

Drug dealers,

immune from prosecution,

and with the media and culture’s blessing,

cause the diseases

that drug dealers help alleviate

with more drugs?

What a concept!

One can buy marijuana strains of all potencies-from weak to very strong- at shops that sell grass. One gets to choose the strength of the product they wish to buy. The more it costs, the stronger it is. There are multiple price points at pot clubs.

Personally, I prefer the less powerful strains. But that’s just me.

Whenever marijuana is discussed on Free Republic, there are those who say we should be “libertarian” on marijuana and other drugs, and should not talk about whether marijuana use has any negative consequences. Those people say there should be no laws regarding drugs.

Others cite the 10th amendment, and say there should be no federal laws because states should set any regulations, if any, regarding drugs.

These seem to be the main arguments. Hopefully others will bring up other arguments that people talk about.
