'ENOUGH IS ENOUGH': Utah mayor announces bid to take Romney's Senate seat
Fox News ^ | 5/23/23 | Kyle Morris

A Utah mayor has announced he will seek the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Mitt Romney in the state's 2024 Senate election, becoming the first candidate to pose a challenge to the Republican senator should he attempt to seek re-election.

Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs – a Republican who gained notoriety in 2020 for his opposition to mask mandates amid the coronavirus pandemic – said he is looking to protect the country that his children will some day inherit.

"I love my children, and I'm worried about the country they will inherit if I sit on the sidelines," Staggs told Fox News Digital. "For too long, we've allowed government bureaucrats to spend away the next generation's future, and we need more voices willing to push back."

Romney filed FEC paperwork last month in a possible first step toward running for re-election, but his chief of staff told local media that he has not made a final decision.

When asked why he believes Romney may not be an effective leader for the state, Staggs said, "Unfortunately, Mitt Romney has let personal beefs get in the way of good governance. From not standing with Mike Lee against raising the debt ceiling to voting for the $1.7 trillion omnibus, he has helped drive us deeper in debt."

"He votes to impeach President Trump but then has the nerve to confirm a radical justice like Ketanji Brown Jackson and incompetent cabinet members like open border [DHS Sec. Alejandro] Mayorkas," Staggs added.

Does this guy have a chance or is Utah ignorant enough to send the fake POS back to Washington?

Guys: Just don't splinter the anti-Mitt vote. I liked the Kennedy kid who almost beat him last time. Romneys are pretty used to losing to Kennedys.

If nobody gets a majority at the state convention, it goes to a primary. Low information voters is how Romney squeezed by last time. That, plus DJ Trump's endorsement.

This jagoff needs to be sent back to Massachusetts.

I knew Mitt Romney was a poor excuse for a politician.

Mormon church membership is important in Utah. But not as much as you might think. Anyhow most Mormons I know can’t stand Mittens. The worry is the corrupt branch of the GOPe in Utah. They want open borders.

My exact question! The only good news is maybe Romney won’t run since he elderly. Let’s hope.

I don’t understand why Utah would want open boarders. Currently they have very little crime. That changes overnight with influx of illegals.

Elder Mormons outside of Harry Reid tend to be long-lived and healthier than average. Too bad there isn’t an Olypics to keep him occupied. He was okay with that.

I thought the Philippine Atty. general was running. Name is Reyes I do believe. Either way Mittens needs a strong challenger. Never heard of this Mayor.

2024:the same challenge needs to be given to incumbents in Ms(Wicker),Wy.(Barasso). Braun in Indiana had the decency to take himself out.

2026-Who’s in SC is gonna challenge Linda? Risch in Idaho is Biden-old. Mitch? A rat governor will have 3 gop choices to choose from should he croak. Cassidy/La.-fragg him. Tillis(see Cassidy). Cornyn-an ex-governor/atty gen please. Capito-find another.
19 seats to defend in ‘26. Stay with smelly incumbents in a mid-term. That means Collins, maybe even some of the smelly ones I’ve mentioned. Let Trump slap them around.

this man sounds very smart.

Romney will have his neice steal the money donated
to him, as is their way, acceptable to the corrupt GOP.

It’s a big jump from being a mayor from a 45k-sized town.
The Utah house speaker may run. He has a bigger job. Will the voters go for an internecine battle?

Who would the Utah higher-ups(gop) pick before the nominees were popularly nominated? They would take into account both resume as well as the familiarity factor. That would point to Mittens once again.
