The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a surprising 5-4 ruling in favor of Black voters in a congressional redistricting case, ordering the creation of a second district with a large Black population.
Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined with the court’s liberals in affirming a lower-court ruling that found a likely violation of the Voting Rights Act in an Alabama congressional map with one majority Black seat out of seven congressional districts in a state where more than one in four residents is Black.

What dems wanted (and will prob get): https://i.imgur.com/qCVyYj5.png
Ah I see Alabama only has 1 Democrat district out of the 7 they have. Yep this is a garbage method to give dems more seats.
Shouldn’t all the districts be drawn as proportional to the society? So if blacks are 30% they should have no more than 30% in a district.
Districts should equally divide a state by the most contiguous, compact geometric district. For example a perfectly square state with 16 districts would be 4x4 smaller squares. Odd shapes can be equally divided by geometric formula.
Each must then be shrunk or expanded to incorporate approx 750k citizens.
New York already had their map sent to judges. Resulting in 5 additional red house wins. Without it, we’d not have the house.
Which in the end actually helped democrats in 2022. They should have waited a year before taking that case.
Interestingly, I think the New York situation was remedied in STATE court, not the Federal courts.
Trump is as pure as white snow. Either the guy didn’t do a dang thing or he’s dumb. Well that’s what your basically saying.
SO! when are they going to address the egregious gerrymandering that was done in Illinois???
“Ruling from SCOTUS puts republican house majority in jeopardy”
Kavanaugh stabs conservatives in the back.
Yes, it was Brett, the moron who took a sword and thrust it through the Constitution.
You think if they were constitutionalists, it would be simple. Do not discriminate based on color. But that’s exactly what they are doing. They are saying black people can only be represented by black people and white people only represent white people.
I have been against separating anyone by race, but it appears that’s a non-starter. I may need to become a racists just to fit in.
Gerrymandering by the left is excused. Even encouraged!
Time to get Alabamans registered. Every person eligible should vote. Time for the state to have registration fairs to get numbers up.
Districts are supposed to be designed with population key to the ‘curves’. Two of the unique factors in drawing the state map...the growth of Huntsville/5th District, and the key power of the black democratic vote in the 7th district.
Too bad we cannot or have not come up with a way to lay out congressional districts without the politics and gerrymandering. That would be like solving the common cold.
Wasserman is very very good. Even so ... we can create district with significant numbers of rural blacks, with a good dollop of whites. Let’s say, 60 percent black, 40 percent white. We should be able to compete in these districts.
The current majority black district in Alabama combines black urban voters in two cities AND the so-called black belt. I’d be okay with a geographically much smaller district encompassing black urban voters of the two cities (connected by a corridor), and a second majority black district, based on rural black voters, with a good percentage of white voters.
Roberts gonna Roberts.
