The Big Bet on Meat Alternatives Fails
Newsweek ^ | June 11, 2023 | BY KATHERINE FUNG

Posted on 06/11/2023 9:51:44 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

Shares of meat alternatives soared when Beyond Meat, the California-based producer that's come to epitomize the sector, went public four years ago, but a fall in stock prices suggests that venture capital investments may have gotten ahead of market realities.

These types of investment cycles are not new to the agricultural and food markets, but meat alternatives have been widely covered in the media because they are part of the larger conversation about climate change and food insecurity.

But existing meat substitutes are not as affordable as real meat and not similar enough in taste. And they have not been proven to be healthier than real meat. So many consumers cannot justify spending money on plant-based products in order to help the planet.

While stock performance shows that existing meat alternatives like Beyond Meat may not be enough to switch consumers off of meat, experts are hopeful that substitutes grown from animal stem cells, without using animals themselves, will be more successful.

Early studies suggest that the prices of these alternatives would be more cost-effective, but with no commercial products on the market yet, there is no market data to indicate if this is so.

It certainly isn’t a healthier option. I thought everyone agreed highly processed foods were not healthy?

Concerns about the meat industry’s environmental impact and carbon footprint have popularized plant-based substitutes in recent years. Market shares show that investors rushed toward the new food trend, but new data suggests that their eyes may have been bigger than their stomachs.

"Larger conversation" meaning "propaganda campaign".

I was given “BEYOND MEAT”. OMG. It smells disgusting. Raw or cooking it unless loading it with spices. My kids tried it with and with out spices. They couldn’t stomach it without and barely with. Even my dogs kinda were picky. I never could bring myself to try it. Cooking it turned me off it immediately! Sorry would rather become a vegetarian then eat that stuff.

article is complete poppycock bullshite across the board ...

nothing but lying, deliberately misleading propaganda ...

fake “meat” costs more than ACTUAL meat at retail because the cost of the materials and processes to manufacture fake meat is greater than the cost of the materials and processes to produce ACTUAL meat ... since the primary input in ALL materials and processes is energy, i.e., carbon based or equivalent, fake meat has a greater impact on the erf than actual meat ... period ...

If I am in the mood for a veggie burger, I will get a veggie burger that makes no pretensions.

A nice chipotle bean burger with a fried egg and cheese on top with hot sauce makes a good breakfast.

Don't you just hate it when that happens. All our fanatsies should pay of big time , < sarc >, because....

Inclusive climate racism and the gathered dark clouds of white, supreme, non-binary drag queenism.

But take note of Newsweek's wiggle phrase, "may have." Perhaps there's hope yet, in someone opens the Gates and lets the solar panels shine....

What I want is a veggie/meat mix that is cheaper than 100% beef, brown rice and meat, or bulgur and meat, or whatever works.

During the meat shortages in the 70s supermarkets were selling the ground-up veggie/meat/flavoring mix to replace 100% ground beef and one version I bought in Missouri or Kansas was very good, good enough that I would buy it now to save money.

plant-based products in order to help the planet

Low carbon footprint

High carbon footprint

Low carbon footprint(from article that calls this sustainable)

High carbon footprint

It's not about "helping the planet". It's about patenting everything for wealth and control.

It sounds good until you taste. Besides if your truly are a VEGAN why would you crave the taste of meat?

Exactly. This stuff is processed so radically that you could not identify what it was when it started out.

Several decades ago I was at a family get together where they were grilling veggie burgers. However, they didn’t really know how to start a charcoal grill so they dumped too much lighter fluid and made anything grilled have a taste of lighter fluid.

It vastly improved the taste of the veggie burger.
