A leading US medical organization is urging doctors to ditch body mass index (BMI) as the primary measurement for a healthy bodyweight, citing its 'racist' roots.
The American Medical Association, the largest organization of doctors in the US, said the metric has been used for ‘racist exclusion’ and fails to consider differences in body composition that vary based on race and sex.

The BMI is not racist, but it is stupid and way off for certain types of body builds that happen in all races.
Right, just like math is racist.
The implication being that obesity was unknown or at best a medical curiosity before non-whites, particularly blacks, became commonplace in western society.

Mathematically, a six-foot tall person would weigh 8 times what a 3-foot tall person of the same body type weighs because they are twice their height.

I’ve always had issue with BMI because it throws people with different body types into the same mix. No way a person with thin bone structure can be fairly compared to a person with thick bone structure.
Who needs a number on an arbitrary scale?
You know if you are fat. Too fat?
Depends on your priorities.
So what the AMA is really saying here is that to make a healthy non-white person, you take a healthy white and add a 3/4 inch layer of whale blubber over the entire surface, minus perhaps the soles of the feet.
BMI is psuedoscience that was designed in the 19th century to be able to write people off. That was a big hobby back then, scientifically “proving” some people just aren’t worth it. That’s why the BMI makes no differentiation between muscle and fat. Big is big, and big is dumb. Just ask the phrenologists. The AMA never should have adopted it. And they should definitely get rid of it.
Many years ago Dragon magazine, #13, published an article of the weight if giants based on exactly this observation.

Yep. I came in (in a water test) at exactly 11% body fat six months ago.
I am morbidly obese according to BMI because I’m a muscular male.
I have to go in, every year, for tape measure tests.
Got news— regardless of race- the BMI index says that a male 6’0” is OBESE at 190 lbs. Race doesn’t enter into it.
Crazy stats to enforce. 190 on 6 foot frame is not obese- it depends on where the weight is. A better measure is lean body mass— to reflect musculature differentiated from fat.
190 that is mostly a lardy medialateral waist distribution-very different appearance.
These people are nuts— large fat humans distributed on the butt, waist upper torso as flabby fatty deposits— yeah that’s obese. The shock for older people is when they can’t carry that weight around as they experience natural ageing in sarcopenia— reduction in muscle mass. So they ride around in carts at the store cause they can’t haul their own weight. Something to be avoided by not being too heavy for one’s muscles, or for that matter damaged joints.
