It could have been a pier washing out or an attachment point or support rusted out. That is a beautiful area and news is saying at least one of the cars is leaking into the river.

Fly fishing was spectacular there. Our rail system is not having a good year.

Captions indicate it collapsed overnight, and caused of course the cars to run off.

Not clear what that means. Did it happen because of the weight of the cars, or did it happen first and the train came later?

If the latter, that is scary for warning systems. Not telling dispatchers that a bridge is out?

River water anywhere in Montana is going to be very chilly.

On the map there are only 2 piers.

They support 3 trusses.

The 2 piers show in the assessment photo, so I doubt they really failed.

Could be that the middle truss collapsed and dragged the end truss toward the center, over the one pier between them.
