“July 4th is a painful reminder of the aloha aina warriors who are no longer with us, and a disgrace to our ancestors and the descendants of Hawaiian nationals who fought to resist american occupation,” John Garcia, minister of foreign affairs and second vice president for the independently formed government Nation of Hawaii, told SFGATE in an email.

Heck of an article for the Fourth of July

So... How many Hawaiians wish to separate from the United States?

The article makes it sound as if a majority do.

I bet the number who wish to separate is very small.

Usual leftist whining. The Hawaiians should think about the fact that the realistic alternative was not independence for Hawaii but its seizure as a colony by France, Germany, or worst of all, Japan. Given the comparatively large number of Americans already there, the annexation changed little except for the removal of the Hawaiian government and installation of an American naval base.

We took Hawaii by force 16 January 1893. There was no cause for the taking or the use of force. Business men goaded State Department personnel into using the Marines to take the Islands.

To become a state, THE POPULACE HAS TO VOTE.
Then Congress has to vote.

I don’t buy “the bamboozlement” argument.

Well to use their terms, I believe the American occupation is a far more palatable one, than if they were placed under a Japanese occupation way back when.

My dad was assigned a 2 year billet in Honolulu (CINCPACFLT). We packed up our belongings from the house in Imperial Beach, CA and took a train and bus to San Francisco. From there, we boarded a US Navy ship and sailed to Honolulu. I had my 5th birthday on the ship. We stayed in a hotel in Waikiki for a couple weeks awaiting officer's quarters. Home would be 1156 Cakon St. Walking distance to Pearl Harbor Elementary where my kindergarten teacher was Mrs Okuna (chinese) and 1st grade teacher Mrs Onaga (japanese). The school sponsored a vaccine night in the cafeteria where everyone in my family received the polio vaccine on a sugar cube (contaminated with SV40). Evening amusements included running through the fog created by the mosquito fogging trucks. We did take a drive around the island to see the "blow hole". On another evening, dinner at the officer's club with entertainment provided by the "Smothers Brothers". I wouldn't hear of them again until they landed a TV show. We left Honolulu on a Boeing 707 that landed at San Diego Lindbergh Field. The old control tower on Pacific Highway was still in use at the time.

I've never been back. My middle son and sister have been there for vacations.

Hawaii will sink just like Guam and California, from left wing policies.

I will vote FOR Hawaiian independence ANY TIME they ask for it!

You can have your two Democrat U.S. Senators and your one Democrat U.S. Congressperson back ANY TIME you want!

With their strategic location, Hawaii would never have had the option to remain an individual country in the 20th century. It was going to be the US, or Imperial Japan, Nazi Germany, or the Soviet Union. They lucked out.
