Two years after the Supreme Court sharply limited the authority of school districts over their students when not on campus or at school-sponsored programs, a high school principal faces a lawsuit alleging he suspended a student for unflattering social media posts about him, despite having known the legal precedent.
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression filed a First and Fourteenth amendments lawsuit on behalf of the rising senior, known only by his initials I.P., against Tennessee's Tullahoma City Schools, recently departed Principal Jason Quick and Assistant Principal Derrick Crutchfield.
Because the suspension is on the student's permanent record, it will "likely impair I.P.’s ability to receive scholarships and gain admission to top colleges and universities because schools assess applicants’ academic and disciplinary records," the suit says.

Also, the memes aren't even that bad (or even good) and certainly did not warrant punishment.
Social media users forward posts of interest.
Public schools are little more than communist indoctrination camps run by thin skinned woke tyrants.
A Closer Look: Social Media Monitoring
From the link...
...Across the country, schools are exploring tools that monitor students’ social media activity in an effort to identify “warning signs” or potential threats. In fact, the Brennan Center for Justice reports a tenfold increase in the number of districts purchasing social media monitoring technology tools from 2013 to 2018....

Public school, at least the way we do it, is doomed.
However.
I’m taking the unpopular position that if you are getting free school you do not have the right to engage in counter-mission behavior including disparaging leaders, organizing student disruptions, etc. Schools cannot exist if they can’t set and enforce standards of civility and proper behavior.
I even thought at the time it happened (and I was 18 years old) that the F the draft t-shirt case was wrongly decided.
Now, if you think school should be abolished, or that “students” not with the program should be expelled, we can have that conversation.
But disrespect and open hostility make free public education impossible, and banning it should be OK
I hope the jury award is large enough that the kid will not need any scholarships.
Respect must be earned. It isn’t just deserved just because of the position one holds.
“free school”
Public schools are paid for by the property taxes of the property owners. Hence, they are not free.
Jahwohl, mein kommandant
Note, it isn’t free. Taxpayers pay for it. Which includes those who attend, since they no doubt pay sales taxes when making purchases,
But teachers complain about the violation of their free speech rights when they are told not to groom their students.
Right.
If teachers, staff, and administrators want respect, then they need to stop acting like lawless hoodlums.
