The Internal Revenue Service said Monday it is ending its decades-old policy of making unannounced home and business visits, in an effort to help keep its workers safe and to combat scammers who pose as IRS agents.
Effective immediately, revenue agents will no longer make unplanned visits to taxpayers’ homes and businesses “except in a few unique circumstances,” the Treasury Department said in a statement. The agency will instead mail letters to people to schedule meetings.
“Today’s announcement is the right thing to do, at the right time,” new IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel told reporters on a call Monday.
The change ends “an era at the IRS,” he said, reversing a practice by revenue officers whose duties include visiting homes and firms to resolve taxpayers’ liabilities by collecting unpaid taxes and unfiled tax returns.
The agency in recent years has experienced more threats, in part tied to conspiracy theories that agents were going to target middle-income taxpayers more aggressively after the passage of a climate, health care and tax bill that provided $80 billion to step up tax collections.
In response, the agency last August announced a comprehensive review of safety at its facilities. And in May, the agency said it would begin limiting workers’ personal identifying information on communications with taxpayers.

Telling.
I rather doubt they’ve tried that in my SSS neighborhood, no reports of missing IRS agents...
The population of Americans willing to shoot thieves.l must be growing along with the tax rate and the inflation of our incomes that buy less and less every day.
Someone at the IRS finally got slapped with a lawsuit and they are going back into hiding.
HAVE done accounting for 66 years.
HAVE NEVER heard of IRS showing up unannounced at home-—NEVER.
They will send letters to wallpaper the Pentagon-—BUT never UNANNOUNCED at your home.
A local Chicago shipping company owner was caught up by the IRS recently for falsifying almost everything about his business returns for the past ~10 years. He even defrauded his employees, many illegals, of wages and he’s going up against the labor department for that.
Get those guys, not the mom and pop shops.
I had no idea they even did this. If someone showed up saying they were an IRS agent I’d call the sheriff. I would not cooperate.
Even if someone shows up saying they’re a cop I’d call 911. There is way too much fraud. A contractor brought a bunch of illegal workers to the General Dynamics plant where I worked as he’d won a contract to tear out an old floor. They were all huddled in a corner while the guard dealt with the issue. The issue? They all had legit looking Florida driver’s licenses. The hologram looked great the photos were good. The names were different. Every license had the same number and address on it. The guard said he’d have taken one without a second look. But ten of them, no.
Turns out you can order almost any type of credential from China. If they don’t look exactly like the real thing few people would question them as, how often do you see an FBI credential? You send a photo in an email and specify what information you want on it. You give them a credit card number and two weeks later, congratulations, you’re a DEA/FBI agent or Sheriff’s detective.
Well, good.
“HAVE NEVER heard of IRS showing up unannounced at home-—NEVER”
Unless you are testifying about the weaponization of the government to censor citizens on Twitter.
“March 9th, 2023, Matt Taibbi appeared before Congress regarding the revelations uncovered by the “Twitter Files,” which demonstrated the US federal government and social media companies worked together to censor information and accounts unfavorable to US interests. The same day, an IRS agent visited Taibbi’s home in New Jersey.”

They’re just going to auto deduct it from your bank account
Damn, I was SURE they were planning an unannounced raid on the Big Guy’s Delaware estate tomorrow. Then this gets announced today. What are the chances?
Retraining will be needed ... that old Stasi swat team mentality will need to be modified.
Virginia did this to me once—at home—over an unpaid $10 penalty for a company that I had sold years prior that hadn’t filed its employee withholding for some quarter. Couldn’t believe it.
I was surprised as well.
This could be a message with only one recipient that needs to know this. Hunter Biden
IRS Agent Michael Dillion didn’t fare very well coming to a taxpayers house. Happened on the street right behind me.
It was just a coincidence.
Now we know why they’re all armed. They’re idiots for not telling anyone they’re coming.
So why do they need 87,000 more IRS agents?
It’s a joke to think these new agents will be there to help answer tax questions and to expedite processing tax returns.
