Zoom is asking all of its employees to return to the office for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, when the tech company blew up as one of the main means of communication for people forced to work from home.

Zoom, which remains a leader in the post-pandemic remote work trend, is now asking all employees within 50 miles of a company office to go in at least two days a week on a hybrid schedule.

Few people at my office have been bitching about coming in twice a week for over two years.

They don’t want to be fired. Who knew, right?

Guy at work told me, I want to roll out of bed in my underwear and start working. Screw coming in the office.

Zoom. In-person work. The irony.

My son-in-law owns a company with a staff of roughly 45 developers. His lease expired in December of 2020. He had everyone switch to WFH and he loves it. He said they are actually MORE productive. I suppose it depends on your responsibilities.

It might matter depending on what one does, but I am never going back to an office.

When half your team is remote already, its not hard to keep things working well if theres no physical reason to be at an office building. In many places the cubes you were in were half height and everyone elses noise and conversations were no longer partially blocked/muted by wall partitions. Many people, found their productivity went up working from home. Those who were slackers had no cover from everyone else around the workplace and have been exposed, and many have been let go.

Right? Doesn't speak well for their business model.

Posting my usual comment about how much I loathe working from home. My home life is my home life, and my work life is my work life. WFH is one step away from house arrest.

The irony!

For those that don’t know, Zoom is web-based video conferencing software used for employees to work from home! They made a fortune during covid on people working from home.

I go into the office twice a week and it is a pathetic waste of time, energy and money. Once I am at my desk it is almost an invitation to my fellow drones to swing by and bother me with all sorts of useless blather or mandatory in person meetings that keep me from actually working.

At this point it seems like the only people who actually like coming into the office are people who hate their home life or those who are lonely.

Developers are used to working from home anyway long before covid to handle after hours/weekend code migrations, patches, and upgrades.

Two days a week isn't bad. They asked me for three. I couldn't see the point, but said OK. Shortly after that, they asked for five.

I told them I might do four and take every Friday or Monday as PTO until I ran out of vacation days. They decided three was enough.

I still don't see the point of adding two hours to my workday by driving back and forth. But I'm retiring in less than a month now.
