Republican presidential hopefuls will line up on August 23 for the first round of primary debates. For conservatives who lived through the late 1970s and the 1980s, Ronald Reagan set a standard for how to behave as a candidate and then how to lead as a president.
What were the traits and accomplishments that made Reagan the model for many subsequent GOP candidates? For me, six come to mind. First, he could win elections. It may sound trite, but the first important test for any political candidate is the ability to win. Only one Reagan. Can't compare.
To: ChicagoConservative27
If we had to compare, I would say Donald Trump or Ron DeSantis.

DeSwamptus is effectively at the GWB-2001 stage.
Not yet fully outed, but getting there quicker than GWB.

I don’t want a Reaganesque candidate.
I want Trump.
I am tired of people trying to pull a bait-and-switch.

I loved Ronnie but now Trump has to finish the job. And he will. We are almost there.

If Reagan was running today half of FReepers would trash him. That is so true. All kinds of conspiracies would be swirling around him from calling him Ukranian stooge to WEF puppet..

Reagan was the man for his time.
Different time today.
Trump is the man for this time.
To: ChicagoConservative27
It was a different time, and Reagan was born and raised in a USA that doesn’t exist any longer.
If you want to ask who is closest to Reagan’s limited government ideology and trust in Americans’ ability to control their own lives? Then it would probably be someone like Rand Paul.
