Emerging Group of Synthetic Opioids May Be More Potent Than Fentanyl, Study Warns

A group of novel synthetic opioids emerging in illicit drugs in the United States may be more powerful than fentanyl, 1,000 times more potent than morphine, and may even require more doses of the medication naloxone to reverse an overdose, a new study suggests.

Nitazenes are a synthetic opioid, like fentanyl, although the two drugs are not structurally related. In the small study published Tuesday in the journal JAMA Network Open most of the patients who overdosed on nitazenes received two or more doses of the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone, whereas most patients who overdosed on fentanyl received only a single dose of naloxone.

“Clinicians should be aware of these opioids in the drug supply so they are adequately prepared to care for these patients and anticipate needing to use multiple doses of naloxone,” the researchers, from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, Lehigh Valley Health Network based in Pennsylvania, and other US institutions, wrote in the study. “In addition, to date there has been a lack of bystander education on repeat naloxone dosing.”

I’m guessing that Singapore will come up with an effective response to these new illegal opioids.

No sympathy. If you buy drugs on the street and take them, you deserve what you get. We’re better off without people who overdose on drugs.

It’s crazy, isn’t it? Ever since the cartels began cooking meth, they realized the bonanza they have in synthetic drugs. You can make these drugs on an industrial scale - there no limit like heroin, where you must harvest poppies, and a new formula is easy to produce.

I just don’t understand the attraction to a drug that immediately and profoundly knocks you out.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Our government allows tons of drugs to come across the border every day. They allow manufacture of drugs on American soil. But it’s also a fact that people take drugs by choice. If there was no market for drugs, China and Mexico wouldn’t smuggle them into the US. So I say again, if you buy drugs off the street and ingest them into your body, I have no sympathy if you don’t survive your addiction.

“I just don’t understand the attraction to a drug that immediately and profoundly knocks you out.”

The purpose of getting high is to dull your awareness of your pain. I suspect that being knocked out is the best achievement of the purpose.

Nothing will happen until Hunter gets an overdose of this in his crack. Then Joe will be able to say that Hunter died in Iraq like Beau did.
