Landlords start nickel-and-diming tenants with fees

It’s already very expensive to rent in a hot housing market like Southern California. Now landlords have found a way to make things even worse.

A growing number of property owners and managers are hitting tenants with extra fees each month — a nickel-and-diming of people that the airlines, for one, have made a core aspect of their business model.

It’s been common for years for landlords to charge more for a parking space or having a pet.

When the government controls the money a landlord can charge for rent...this happens. The tenants love rent control but the quality of units will drop.. Now, there will be a basic maintained rental unit with lots of fees. No mention of the fees the landlord has to pay to the rent control board and taxes to run the bloated city government.. Also, maintenance and repair costs are NOT controlled..so landlord keeps getting squeezed from both ends. L.A. needs to be voluntarily emptied.

More for a pet is COMMON-—ALL over the USA.

A large dog with separation worries can do more damage than 5 kids....in less time.

I also get those UNRELENTING calls-—NEVER in a voice where ENGLISH is their FIRST LANGUAGE-—

Now saying this to caller:

I WILL SELL-—$31 MILLION-—CASH ONLY-—ALL IN ONE PAYMENT ONLY I CAN SIGN OFF THE ESCROW——

Stymies them for a few seconds.

In Nevada-—a landlord CANNOT ask a prospective tenant about a criminal record-—

Leaves the landlord open to renting to Sex offenders.

Yea, it’s amazing how many old farm houses are just left to rot in a field. And old barns too. The wife and I had fipped houses for about ten years or so. But we always sold them. We had a lot of people wanting us to rent to them, but I just couldn’t stand the headaches, so we never got into the rental side of it.

#11: "They think it's bad now, wait until they have to rent an ethnically diverse, multi-family unit from Vanguard or Black Rock."

Horrible. The thought of that sends shivers up my spine.

...and used oil sells for a premium. It’s not uncommon to hear of restaurant grease being stolen.

Whiney article written by a child.

Thus is standard practice for decades.

I pay for parking to get a permanent spot. Pet fees have always been charged.

Did they whine about trash fees? Pest control fees?

Do they complian paying for water and cable?

There’s a reason they won’t take pets. They do a lot of damage. Many tenants are young and they don’t know how to take care of pets.

Yes, it’s bad if a landlord can’t ask a prospective tenant about a criminal record. It could be worse.

In Massachusetts a real estate agent cannot ask a prospective tenant where they are from. If they do they might have to pay a large fine.

This MA lawsuit is an example of why I never wanted to be a landlord—just too much weirdness can happen.

Life is too short for that garbage.

I don't give an inch to the vultures. $31 million is a pretty difficult hurdle. If I was selling, I would take your approach, but insist on 150 oz of physical gold. Payment in USD fiat could evaporate overnight.

Utility companies do it too. One month I used $5.00 worth of natural gas, but had a $65.00 monthly bill due to all of the extra fees.

Electric and water did the same thing. Water company charges $30 minimum for 2,000 gallons. I used 750 gallons and got charged the 30 as well as all of the other fees for a 75.00 water bill.

The sad part is, the extra fees such as the non-returnable application fee and the background check fee and the credit check fee, all of which are raised excessively, price a person out of homes and contribute toward a San Francisco type environment all across the nation.
