Bishop Karen Oliveto sees her consecration in 2016 as a breaking point for some of the thousands of people who have made the once unthinkable decision to leave the United Methodist Church.
Oliveto is the church's first openly gay bishop and oversees congregations in Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming and one church in Idaho. Her service defies long-standing rules in the denomination. Disregard for those church laws is fueling divisions that have already led to the exodus of about 20% of the United Methodist Church's congregations across the U.S. since disaffiliations began in 2019. The number of members who have left with their congregations isn't as clear, as the latest figures from 2021 don't reflect the total number of departures.

Didn’t Christ say to render under Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God? Beyond that, how was Christ political?
Sodom & Gomorrah were gay..... how did that work out???
You and your siblings, or father, decide where the funeral is and who speaks after your mom passes. I don’t think I would knowingly go to a funeral presided over by a gay person. Everyone has to make their own decision; however.
Correct.
Thank you.
They’re Wesleyans?
As far as Reverend Mother goes (UMCRevMom@aol.com), i wonder what did she is on. Or what she thinks.
“What side she is on”
One near me flies the fag flag, another is a little more subtle. But they’re not in the same league as the Church of Christ which flies the flag and has all but painted the church in rainbow colors. Most especially on their electronic sign board, begging queers to show up.
But 80% are staying.
I left in the early 1980’s when a group of young adult and teenage Methodists came to our church and sang high praises for Robert Mugabe. I only went back a couple of times to help my aging parents attend the services.
Wouldn’t be in Minneapolis would it?
I went as a kid. Even got married in the Methodist Church my parents (now mother, dad passed last year) attends. It’s not the church it was back then.
I call it a dead church or when Mom is around a social club. A dead church is a church that the spirit no longer visits.
Satan might visit it, but the holy Spirit no longer does.
It’s to bad. It’s a beautiful building with a massive pipe organ but all the gay stuff is just to much.
I have hung in there up until now, hoping for a miracle. But if the UMC General Conference next Spring officially goes gay, then I am gone.<p.
They’ve been gun grabbers for years.
She answered in posts 24 & 25.
My wife and I are former members of the United Methodist Church. Our church is one of over 3000 congregations which have split off from the previous church. If you’re interested, search for Global Methodist Church and you’ll see the new church doctrine. Much more conservative than the founding organization.
Churches live on one thing....money.
Take your money elsewhere and they will quickly die.
A building is not a Church. A Church is a group of like minded individuals.
I was raised in that evil church by my hippy parents. I believe our “minister” was the first to perform a gay wedding in the UM church. Many moons ago.
My wife’s grandfather was an EUB minister, the U in EUB adopted by the United Methodists when the denominations merged. We drove by the local UMC church this afternoon and they are flying the rainbow flag. I told her her grandfather would be appalled to see that spectacle.
That is what is happening. Did someone think differently? Most of the churches separating, not surprisingly, are in the Bible Belt.
