Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) is looking into opening taxpayer-funded, city-owned grocery stores in areas in which businesses have pulled out due to rampant crime.
Johnson announced a partnership with the Economic Security Project to look into the possibility of opening city-owned grocery stores. The first step in the partnership will be to perform a feasibility study, but the city did not provide a timeline, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Johnson claimed his administration is “committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities.”

Indeed, in the good old days when Chicago had an operative Mafia, how much of this mass retail theft existed and how much of that existed in Mafia run neighborhoods? Sad to say, but the Mafia wasn't all bad.
When the Mafia ran the town the streets were clean and the people were safe...............
The city and State are already giving them the money to buy food, now they want to give them the food for free???
These people are delusional
Yep-
a free for all paid for by those they hate.
City owned grocery store ==> filthy disgusting dump full of rotten produce and spoiled meat.
city owned grocery stores will be robbed and lose to inventory shrinkage or disappearances. Whatever the correct term is for inventory not sold because it was stolen.
So then, the city will have to budget for operating losses of these stores.
So he can make his political statement about food deserts and all that, but it’s going to cost the city money.
And it will be hard for him and liberals to discuss the situation, because it will be black youth gangs and other assorted criminals, who will be stealing his inventory. It would be racist to talk about the black gangs involved in the crimes, so when the city has a hole in its budget due to losses at these city owned stores, what or who will he blame?
I realize that in politics, if a problem isn’t solved by your actions, then you have to be able to blame someone or some outside force for the failure.
But if the failure is due to black criminals, what will the black mayor and assorted liberals of Chicago blame the problems on?

“These people are delusional”
No, they are not. They know exactly what they’re doing.
Won’t WORK. Just like military commissaries. Always running in the red, and will need money from the CITY to keep the doors open. RUN from this trap. It won’t work.

Yes somebody at the Economic Security Project just got a fat check.
Indeed it’s amazing how many people have no idea how it was.
Well, well. Someone who posts frequently here predicted this. Of course. The leftists have as a goal to destroy the means of production and make them part of government.
The democrats allowed rampant crime to increase, without trying to stop it. Legitimate businesses can’t give things away - they can exist only if they make a profit.
The left hates the profit motive. They hate private businesses. They want everything in the hands of the collectivity. They never miss an opportunity to make it happen, pretending not to really be doing that.
When the government takes over grocery stores, it will start out real good - everybody happy, customers delighted to find product. But soon the government store is stripped bare too, but stays open only because it is funded by taxpayer money.
