Trump criticizes Republicans pushing abortion bans with no exceptions: 'You're not going to win'

Trump said members of his own party "speak very inarticulately about this subject.

"I watch some of them without the exceptions, et cetera, et cetera," he said, referring to conservatives who don't support abortion exceptions in cases including abortion and rape. "I said, 'Other than certain parts of the country, you can’t — you’re not going to win on this issue. But you will win on this issue when you come up with the right number of weeks."

"Because Democrats don’t want to be radical on the issue, most of them, some do," he continued. "They don’t want to be radical on the issue. They don’t want to kill a baby in the seventh month or the ninth month or after birth. And they’re allowed to do that, and you can’t do that."

In his interview, Trump said "people are starting to think of 15 weeks" as "a number that people are talking about right now" in terms of a federal abortion ban, but said he wouldn't sign such legislation as president.

"No, no," he replied.

He went on to call a six-week ban signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, one of his rivals, "a terrible thing and a terrible mistake."

Trump claimed "the most powerful people that are anti-abortion are okay with" not having a complete and total ban.

We have to have the opinion that it is ok to kill babies to get elected to public office. /s

In the current moment, more women are for access to abortion than are men who are against it. And when abortion is one of the main issues of a political campaign, women are far more likely to vote than are men. Reality sucks sometimes.

"Right to abortion" will be a states rights forever.

Now Right to Life is another matter.

No state is stuck with their law as it is now. Get to your state reps. Rally at your state houses.

Why some people insist only a federal law will change anything? No different than libs always wanting federal bans and mandates.

It’s so much easier to exact change on local levels but it’s not without effort. Perhaps both parties are lazy.

FedGov needs to stay out of this one. SCOTUS said it’s a State issue, not Federal.

In today’s MSNBC interview when asked about his position on abortion, the first thing out of Trump’s mouth was “I think they’re all going to like me. Both sides are going to like me.”

“And then when asked about the six week abortion ban, he said it’s a “terrible thing.” A “terrible” thing?!

Donald Trump threw pro-life conservatives under the bus and then ran over them. He has made it crystal clear that he is pro-choice, NOT pro-life.

And like his disastrous judgment in hiring, he craves the approval of the “other side.”

> WWJD? <

A good, and often agonizing, question. Would it be moral to try to balance the pluses and minuses of the situation? For example, the use of the two atomic bombs shortened a terrible war. It also killed many civilians, including innocent children.

WWJD?

Situation normal in the GOP with respect to MOST subjects. He should know by now that being in the GOP is like dragging a millstone around on his back. Lots of recalcitrance and dead weigh to drag around with him.

What if Republicans made a deal with democrats: state funded encouragement of illegals and blacks and latinos having as many abortions as possible, while white women are banned from the privilege of having an abortion because of their innate white supremacy.

Would the democrats agree to that?

Agreed. Graham is an idiot/corrupt GOPe for calling for a national ban that was just as self contradictory as calling for nationwide on demand like in CA and NY.

President Trump is exactly right on this. The Republican Party has moved on from the shrill rhetoric, as have most Americans.

It all depends on the criteria people use, to evaluate the situation.

Some people take an absolutist position, that abortion kills a baby, and that we should work to ban abortion, in every state.

Those people are not considering the political realities that we are not going to ban abortion in America. But that’s how they view the situation.

Some people don’t care about the politics of abortion, they want abortion stopped and they say we will all stand before God someday. They don’t care about the political environment.

To me, it all depends on the criteria people use to opine on this subject.

If your criteria are that it’s a state issue now, you will have one opinion of what should be done. If your criteria are that we need national restrictions, applicable to all 50 states, you will have another opinion.

No Republican will win nationally without the complete support of pro-life conservatives. President Trump has had a great pro-life record so far, but risks losing it with comments like these. The Republican Party is being split in two. The pro-lifers and social conservatives will end up on one side, and the uni-party on the other.

President Trump's greatest political strength is his depth of support amongst his core supporters. If he attempts to move to the left on the defense of life, second amendment, protecting children from sexual mutilation, or other values issues, he will lose.

What is so hard with: “This is no longer a federal issue and any candidate for federal office promising more restrictions or less is lying to you.”?

Trump keeps giving the left hope by keeping this as a federal issue.

How much more does this man have to say to show you he’s NOT a pro-life conservative but a pro-choice RINO?

No other Republican could get the pass on these issues that Trump gets.

He even prefaced his answer to the MSNBC host that his intent is to please BOTH sides, which is how we ended up with that political hack, Christopher Wray, as FBI director.

There is no compromise with Democrats if you are pro-life!

And it is an outrage that he would dare call the “Heartbeat” bill a “terrible thing.”

Trump supporters spend most of their time trying to explain away things he’s actually said and what he really believes.

Forget the stupid polls which are always wrong, Trump has already lost the most conservative part of his base, and I think he knows it, which is why he is allowing what he really believes to come forward and is giving interviews to what he used to call “fake news.”

“With republicans like these who needs democrats.”

Trump’s position is the same as Reagan’s as far as I remember.

Roe v Wade has been overturned; let the abortion issue alone until after the nation is rescued. That issue will not be resolved during a primary season. Whatever the Republicans come up with is a sword handed to the democrats. Remember Lindsay Graham jumped to inject it into the campaign just before the voting started in 2022.

Politically he is correct. A lot of conservatives don’t care to win at all cost.
