Thousands of historic shipwrecks in the US are being threatened by wood-destroying mussels

They’re hungry, hungry mollusks.

Thousands of historic shipwrecks sunk in the American Great Lakes are at risk of being lost forever thanks to invasive, wood-destroying mussels.

The lakes are home to an estimated 6,000 shipwrecks, with some dating back to the 17th century, according to estimates from the University of Buffalo.

The Quagga mussel, originally native to the waters of Russia and Ukraine, is believed to have arrived in the Great Lakes in 1989 — possibly as a result of ballast dumps from transoceanic freighters traversing the lakes.

The population of Quagga mussels has exploded in the waters of the once pristine lakes, where near-perfect visibility made the wrecks easy to see even decades after they went down.

Now the Quagga mussels have taken over, scientists say.

Had to post this article based just on the ridiculousness of the premise.

What in the actual F is a "historic shipwreck"

Newsflash! Little creatures like to eat wood.

Also Newsflash! The ships are ALREADY GONE! They sank...IN THE WATER!

A ship that sank in the water does not need to be "preserved" and we don't have to be concerned at all that they are being eaten away by hungry creatures.

“There is currently no way to stop the unrelenting shellfish and scientists are racing to excavate as many of the ships as possible before they are consumed.”

What a total waste of time and expense. Just build a model or paint a picture and go on with your life.

Yeah, cause I don’t have enough crises to worry about? I gotta add “historic ship wrecks in the Great Lakes? The nation is imploding, millions of enemy agents are flooding into America, and, sorry, I don’t care about wooden relics in Lake Erie.

Maybe biden can appoint a ‘shipwreck money laundering Commission’ and put kamala in charge. Ought to be good for 10% of a billion every year.

Ridiculous. Boats made out of wood will eventually decay and there will be nothing recognizable left of them. No sea creatures are necessary for this to happen.
A waste of newsprint.

A couple of fish species will feed on the Quagga mussels. Similarly, the mussels are edible for humans.

Good news: the mussels are effective for filtering the water.

Bad news: toxins ingested by the mussels include botulinum, and are passed up the food chain when ingested by fish and humans.

As stupid/innocent as it sounds, this is yet another Boris and Natasha plot for government interference w/private economy.

Just like with historic districts, where you are basically banned from improvements that might create income or provide infrastructure to support population growth, this will just increase the surface area where vessels will not be allowed to travel or fishermen to fish.

“...originally native to the waters of Russia and Ukraine...”

Perhaps this a message to Hunter Xiden and porridge brain FJB as a new way to launder money if their operation in Ukraine is falling apart.

For people who steadfastly believe in evolution they certainly seem to want to bring a halt to it by freezing everything as it is with no further natural development.
