Embattled Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey is expected to defiantly announce Monday that he will seek re-election — less than a week after being indicted on explosive corruption charges.

The 69-year-old Democrat issued a statement Friday, the day of his Manhattan federal indictment, insisting, “I’m not going anywhere” — despite widespread calls including from top officials in his own party to resign.

Monday’s expected press conference would be his first in-person appearance since he and his wife were charged with taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in the form of gold bars, a Mercedes-Benz convertible, cash and even exercise machines and an air purifier

If it gets that far he will win re-election in a landslide. We are talking NJ here.

I said in another thread on FR yesterday that I don’t think he should resign.

He was previously indicted and put on trial and was acquitted.

Until he’s convicted of a crime, he should remain in his job, if he’s convicted then he must resign or be expelled by the Senate, otherwise the only people who should remove him from office are the voters. If they want to elect a crook, then that’s on NJ.

Trump is currently under 4 criminal indictments, should he be forced to drop out of the race ?? Of course not, the voters should be the ones to pass judgement on Trump.

If forcing people to resign based on nothing but allegations become the norm, how many Republicans in the future will be forced to resign or drop out of running.

>>Others Democrats who called for Menendez to resign were U.S. Rep. Andy Kim (D-3rd), U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-6th), Senate President Nick Scutari, Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin and New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chairman LeRoy J. Jones Jr.

He’s lost the support of the Democratic Party in NJ. He’s toast.

Thoroughly off topic, but there isn't anything I could say about Menendez that hasn't already been said numerous times by numerous people over numerous years.

In the 25 or so years since the advent of auto correct, I have seen at least a thousand examples--and that is not an exaggeration--of my college students saying in a Word doc that they would "defiantly purchase a CD" of such-and-such a concert. This is because they would type "definatly" for "definitely," and Word would dutifully pick the wrong replacement, which the student of course never proofread. This has to be the first time in all of those years where the writer actually meant "defiantly" in context, and it felt strange to read it, instantly assume that it was the usual error, and then realize that in fact the word was not in error.

Back to politics.

I do like the screw you attitude when it comes to responding to the demands of the Govenor and the Senate. They don’t really deserve much respect.

I’m sure he’s toast, I still don’t think he should resign.

I still remember he was indicted previously, went to trial and was acquitted, what if he’s found not guilty again, but went ahead and resigned now, he would be an innocent man and out of the Senate.

Until he’s convicted of a crime, the voters should be the ones passing judgement.

He wasn’t acquitted in the first case A mistrial was declared with the jury deadlocked 10 to 2 voting to convict. The prosecutor chose not to retry the case.

I think we should have a higher standard for holding public office than “not yet convicted of a crime”.

This is all this guy knows how to do - defraud taxpayers. This is a perfect reason for term limits. We can’t rely on elections because he has so many special interests paid off, the average voter doesn’t stand a chance of being represented.

Well that means most of them would be gone. High standards are not standard in the swamp. High fallutin’ arrogance, greed, and no fear of the voters is the current “standards”.

A politician on trial for anything is pointless in a jury trial. The jury box is confused with the voting booth. I really don’t know what the solution is?

We probably should, but ask yourself, should Trump quit running for POTUS, he’s currently under 4 criminal indictments.

The answer is, absolutely not.

The answer from most everyone in this forum is the charges against Trump are bogus and the charges against Menendez are real.

Both maybe true, but charges against both are real.

What if the charges against both are real.

What if the charges against both are, made up.

If allegations are going to take someone down, then anyone going against the Establishment will be smeared, it’s pretty much that way now.

Yes, Trump should not be running for President, and neither should Biden. They are both crooks. Have been for decades.

His last trial resulted in a mistrial. The DOJ never presented another case against him on those charges.
