The House rejected a short-term spending bill on Friday designed to keep the government open through the September 30 deadline, making a government shutdown almost inevitable.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) continuing resolution (CR) failed 198-232 despite his inclusion of significant border security measures included to coax skeptical conservatives. Twenty-one Republicans opposed the measure which would have extended government funding for 30 days.
McCarthy is expected to meet with his Republican colleagues Friday afternoon to discuss a path forward. Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) alerted colleagues that votes are expected Saturday, a change from the previous schedule.

We’ll see, the Reps don’t have the stones to shut the gov’ment down.
Wonder if we can get the White House shut down in this process?
So this “shutdown” will only last on Saturday, right? Because the new fiscal year starts on 1 OCT ...
Does that put us in a safe space? 🤔
I gotta idea, shut down OPM, BATF, DoJ, and IRS for a week? Then the SEC, FCC and FTC for two weeks.
Then rinse and repeat as necessary through the alphabet...

Oh, the humanity! Unplanned paid vacations for all federal layabout workers.
Wall Street planning to crash the market and blame Republicans?
They love the money printing since it inflates everything including stock prices. They will force the conservatives to give in and a new bull market will commence, along with higher and higher deficits.
This is a greedy country we’re living in now, and the appetite for gain among the power brokers is insatiable. Something will snap and there will be great suffering all over the land. This madness is unsustainable.
Poor things will be dying of starvation in the streets.
The stock market rose steadily in the afternoon.
They probably think there will be a deal to avoid the shutdown.
Or it’s a trap to pull in the suckers.
We’ll know more on Monday.
Actually, only a small percentage of them will even be affected.
This is going to be worse than Covid for the Federal employees? Imagine the back pay. Got to admit Biden did zero for 100 days while McCarthy tried to resolve a potential shut down. Biden owns this, period!
This is hilarious drama—a year from now it will mean nothing no matter what happens—and most folks won’t even be able to remember what happened.
DC is like five year old daycare.
Everybody blames everyone else for everything—and meanwhile the playpen is a mess!
FREE AT LAST! FREE AT LAST! GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY, FREE AT LAST!
McCarthy promised no more CRs. What has that idiot been doing for the last 6 months? He should have been sending individual funding bill to the Senate once a week.
L
SHUT ‘ER DOWN !!
Yeah, like most stock market “experts”, I’m good at explaining the past.
Forecasting the future? Ehhhh, not so much.
LOL.
Exactly. Continueing Resolutions are equivalent to Tyranny of the Bureaucrats.
The only power the Bureaucrats respect is the power of the purse.
The CRs eviscerate Congress' power of the purse.
So on September 30th, the federal government runs out of money?
Then what’s this clock thingy all about?
