Scalise Blocked, Expected to Step Aside

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise will not secure the 217 votes needed to become the chamber’s speaker, according to sources.

The House conference has been delaying bringing the nomination to the floor for a full vote, as several members tell me Scalise cannot win.

“There are as many as 20 members opposing Scalise,” one source said, noting almost all are “Jordan and McCarthy supporters,” referring to Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who lost to Scalise on a secret ballot for nomination to replace ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

Publicly, Jordan is supporting Scalise, but privately he has told others he will enter the race as soon as Scalise withdraws.

House GOP Study Committee Chairman Kevin Hern, R.-Okla., and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R.-Minn., are also discussing plans to enter the speaker's race after Scalise exits. Both are also preparing to challenge Jordan.

Jordan lost the vote to Scalise among House Republicans Tuesday, 113-99.

Jordan then pushed for a motion that the House GOP's nominee must win 217 votes before the matter is brought to the floor. That motion was rejected by the conference.

Hern appears to be the sleeper candidate. He’s solidly conservative, supports former President Donald Trump, and is liked by moderates who won’t back Jordan.

Emmer, meanwhile, is a moderate opposed by Trump, which likely would doom his bid for the leadership position.

No, things like this can be messy and need to be allowed to run their course. Otherwise we get losers.

If they spend another dollar in the Ukraine, that is far worse than accomplishing nothing.

I’m getting nervous. If Republicans can’t agree on a candidate we might end up with Hakeem Jeffries.

Noooo! According to some of the intellectual giants, the House not being to able to do ANYTHING is preferred!

As stated continuously by Rush, it is a good thing!

Was he an intellectual giant?

Huh????

The response:

Unlike the radical leftists and socialists that make up the overwhelming majority of the Democrat party and vote in lockstep, there is room for independent thought and difference in the Republican party.

It’s always chaos with the GOP. Most of them RINO’s or better yet, Assistant Democrats. There are a small number of true conservatives and patriots.
Meanwhile, the Democrats are virtual Marxists, and vote in lockstep per their leader Hakeem J’s orders.

Then why are we still futzing around?

Wasn’t there a plan when he was voted out?

Or did these alleged patriots get all emotional and storm the Bastille, release the crazy people, and dance in the end zone like Dubya did?

I'm less concerned about who the speaker is, and more concerned about how they are going to stand up to the Democrats.

The new speaker, whoever it is, should be able to stand firm on returning to regular order on the budget, and also be willing to end the Ukraine ATM machine.

There is nothing sacred about getting things done. Conservatism is not getting things done because conservatism opposes government intrusion into life.

Looking ahead to the Nov CR date, you cannot stomp your feet and demand the ultimate in border control features, pre-approved Senate agreement to vote for impeachment, elimination of all LGBT programs from DoD and other agencies . . . you will not get that through.

You can get Ukraine funding cut maybe almost all the way to zero. You can maybe get a few % spending cut off of the debt ceiling legislation total. And you can probably get some border control funding, since the blue recipients of shipped illegals are screaming at the WH.

We CAN get those items. But we’ll have to have a Speaker who wants those items. You can probably get a CR that the majority of the conference will approve.

In the final analysis, that’s all that is required of a Speaker. Only advance legislation that the majority of the House GOP will vote for.

The Republicans are cementing their reputation of being unable to accomplish anything.

We will call that the Fox News Brit Hume angle. LOL....

I’m guessing most of us have little idea what Scalise believes or his voting record on issues.

The best thing would seem to be to let Patrick McHenry continue as acting Speaker. He is immune from being vacated!
