Starbucks faces walkout at hundreds of US stores
BBC ^ | 2023-11-15 | Michelle Fleury

The union representing thousands of Starbucks workers in the US is staging a walkout on one of the coffee chain's busiest days of the year.

The action comes amid a bitter fight between Starbucks and Starbucks Workers United, which started organising workers at the company in 2021.

The two sides are fighting over pay, scheduling and other issues.

Roughly 200 stores are expected to be affected by the 16 November work stoppage.

Barista Michelle Eisen, one of the union's leaders, said the company could afford to "do better by its workers".

The protest is the second to coincide with Starbucks' 'Red Cup' day, when the company distributes reusable, holiday-themed cups.

In some locations, the walkout is set to last just a few hours, while in others it is expected to close the branch for most of the day.

The union said the action was aimed at calling attention to Starbucks' refusal to fairly negotiate contracts with the unionised stores.

Members are also protesting work conditions, including inadequate staffing on promotional days.

This might not have the consequences they are hoping for, but that's not necessarily a bad thing for the world in general.

It’s a “woke” strike; they are looking to walk out for a couple of hours. How ineffective is that? I am not fan of unions, but if you are going to strike, then the plan is to hurt the owners. What these guys are doing is about as flaccid an action as you can get.

It’s a nice break from being online at home. Still it’s not worth it. The work is hard and the CEO wants to talk about racism. I’ll make my own or drink the senior coffee at
Mcdonalds-documented to be better.

Exactly. I went to the first Starbucks store in Seattle, hated the coffee. Went again in Spokane with a friend who insisted on going there. Ghastly coffee, terrible service.

Good one.

A win for the union equals higher top shelf coffee prices.

Soon after, starbuck baristas will be members of Pine Street Logging,
our local unemployment outlet.

Just put forth the story that there’s a good chance a disgruntled Starbucks worker might be a risk handling your order.

Awesome-

The management at Starbucks should embrace this with all their other enviro, homo, globalist, feminist, socialist crap they claim to stand behind.

Hahahaha! The Union morons are just feeling entirely dumb for organizing and negotiating contracts that didn’t include raises all the non-union store employees are getting. This is what happens when you hand of your responsibility to, essentially, a criminal enterprise.
