A separation of science and politics might be called for.
Once upon a time, science evoked enthusiasm. Yes, cinematic mad scientists went overboard with body parts and lightning, but real-life researchers brought us innovations, insights, and improved standards of living. But, like many institutions, science got political and cult-y. Thin-skinned narcissists with government jobs hijacked the systematic pursuit of knowledge and rebranded it as an unassailable body of Truth with a capital T. They cast out as heretics well-informed critics who interpreted evidence differently. In the process, they lost the trust of a public which saw insights replaced by bossy ideologues.
A full third of Americans say science is a wash, equally positive and negative. Eight percent say it's mostly negative. The plunge in support since the appearance of COVID-19 is no coincidence; that's when some scientists, especially those in official positions, began wielding "science" as a shield against debate and a tool for control.
It seemed reasonable in 2020 to heed widespread calls to "follow the science." With the outbreak of the pandemic why not let people versed in studying and dealing with disease set the tone? Pretty quickly, though, politicians and public health officials began justifying drastic and controversial measures such as lockdowns, mask mandates, and school closures as dictated by "the science."

There’s real science, and then there also is leftist “science”.
This is a very good article. I thought Reason was a left wing rag?
As government gets bigger, it takes over every aspect of society and life. To phony self-described liberals on the left, this is always a good thing. But just as they would say there are areas where religion does not belong, there are areas where government does not belong, such as science. To the left and the right, you could say that government and religion have exchanged places as far as their positive and negative impacts.
Reason is Libertarian.
Scrap the Dept of Energy. It exists only to protect special interests.

It started well before that with the global warming,”WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!” hoax.
The appearance of Covid-19 was an opportunity for charlatans. Even before the WHO declared a pandemic, they engaged in a massive coordinated effort to spread misinformation throughout social media. Although pre-pandemic, medical misinformation was targeted more or less equally across the political spectrum (or even more at the left), during the pandemic, they targeted conservatives.
I think the reason for disproportionately targeting conservatives was political. We were in an era of leftist outrage and hysteria over having a President Trump rather than some socialist president. The left went to all kinds of lengths to destabilize the country. Targeting medical misinformation at conservatives helped to both undermine the conservative movement and hamper the president's efforts to control the pandemic.
Until we can address the role of charlatans (who spread antivax propaganda and medical misinformation for personal profit) in sowing distrust of the STEM professions, this situation is not going to turn around. Most scientists are not communicators. Most scientists would rather hide in their labs or offices than try to inform the public. At the same time, our educational system is falling down on the job and failing to teach large numbers of people anything about the STEM subjects.

I too used to have undying faith in my country, until Trump's presidency, and the bioengineered virus used to take him out, opened my eyes & killed that undying faith I had.
Who knew that innocence could be killed in someone as old as I am.
Dr Kadlec felt that Fauci had other reasons for wanting to divert attention away from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. He said Fauci was likely worried about his reputation if it eventuated that his agency had funded the gain-of-function research that sparked the outbreak.
Source was Pfauci's boss. I'll bet he was a right wing MAGA nationalist trying to sell supplements.
