These cities and towns are most dangerous in the US, study finds

(NEXSTAR) – While violent crime has dropped to pre-pandemic levels nationwide, the FBI announced, changes weren’t the same across the board. The crime rates remained elevated in dozens of cities around the country.

Personal finance site MoneyGeek used the FBI crime data to look at crime rates in 302 large cities and 1,010 small cities and towns around the country. They looked at both violent crime and property crime, and used research by the University of Miami and the University of Colorado Denver to determine the cost of crime in each area.

After crunching the numbers, the large city with the highest cost of crime was Birmingham, Alabama. The violent crime rate – which includes instances of murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault – in Birmingham was 1,682 per 100,000 residents. The property crime rate – which includes burglary, larceny, and vehicle theft – was 4,173 per 100,000 residents.

The city's formerly most populous ethnic group, non-Hispanic white, has declined from 57.4 percent in 1970 to 21.1 percent in 2010.

Interesting. Crime cost per capita instead of crime rates.

Perhaps a correlation with something else?

“Crime cost per capita instead of crime rates.”

Paragraph two for rates.

I wish we could find some kind of pattern to determine why these cities are so dangerous.

The only thing in Birmingham worth using...is the airport. Don’t stay at any hotel locally. Don’t stop within the city at any gas station. For any stops? Be at least 12 miles from the center of town. Avoid passing through after dark. Don’t plan on exiting Amtrak train in town. Don’t use the bus station.

About a dozen years ago, some craftsman was in Birmingham for a week or two of work. He’d taken his car over to a car-wash...was shot dead while rinsing the vehicle...mid-day.

We just need to find the “root” cause.

Can’t quite put my finger on it. Let’s ask Scott Adams.

Use 459 to re route around B’ham (east west) after dark. North south youre stuck with 65. just avoid exits between Finley ave (North end) and Oxmoor (south end).

Let us do an experiment.

A mouse presses the black button and gets an electric shock.

The mouse then presses the white button and gets food.

For some reason the mouse starts avoiding the black button and keeps pressing the white button.

That is what racism is.

I am reminded of when Lincoln was inaugurated as President of the US in 1861. Visitors to Washington D.C. were given a map showing the most dangerous parts of the city to stay away from.

Back in the late 1980s my wife’s family was coming back from a funeral in Georgia and spent the night in Birmingham Al. My brother-in-law decided to sleep in the van while the rest of them went into the motel. He was constantly being woke up by people trying to get into the van. They were met with the muzzle of a 12 gauge sawed off shotgun he had at that time.

My wife said she saw her first drug deal in the parking lot while there.

It seems that wbat at least a few FReepers want is nothing less than segregation. Thing is...how can it even come about?

It (at least to me) seems to be physically impossible to accomplish. Do you go full-on apartheid and fence off entire sections of cities that only certain people can inhabit? If you live in a small town, do you post a sign at the edge of town that says ‘if you ain’t white, you’ll be shot on sight’?

And there are numerous desegregation laws and statutes that have been passed for decades. Do you go back and erase every one of them? That alone could take years.

It boggles the mind what it’d take to make this nation liveable again.

Here in New England we are heavily segregated—in most exurban and rural communities.

There are three tricks:

—Keep talking about “saving the planet” while enforcing brutally restrictive zoning laws.

—Keep the state and towns broke so they cannot afford to extend city/town water and sewer into these communities.

—No mass transit (not even buses).

Those make it almost impossible to build multifamily housing of any kind—and keeps single family house prices ridiculously high.

The trick is to talk a good game—and pretend you are a caring liberal....

;-)

Birmingham didn’t have the highest rate of violent crime, however. Memphis, Tennessee; Detroit, Michigan; and Little Rock, Arkansas all saw more violent crimes per capita.

Memphis, along with Tacoma, Washington, and St. Louis, Missouri, had the highest property crime rates.

Long distance information, get me out of Memphis, Tennessee ...

All those hell holes have one thing in common - they’re either majority or near majority black population and are run by blacks.

The elephant in the room nobody wants to notice.

I decided in 2013...I’d take Amtrak from DC to Birmingham, and ride the bus to my dad’s farm about an hour up the interstate (making it easier for him).

I get to the Amtrak station in Birmingham....something out of the 1920s (bad condition). Took a short ride to the Greyhound station (discovering it’s a rough neighborhood). Waited for 2 hours for the next bus.

Sat in the middle of the bus...finding 5 guys around me. All had wrapped up their state prison experience that morning. We got about 10 miles out of town, heading north. Police patrol cars encircle the bus...pulling it over. They were interested in some guy in the very rear of the bus...acting weird (high on something).

All in all, it was an interesting trip (I’ll never make that again).
