My story: Wedge I. A friend and I went down there a couple times to see what the fuss was about. IIRC, it was about an 8' face day. We just watched the commotion on the jetty. What caught my eye was the ambulance with tether lines going down to sand meets water with barbells at the end. Ok, looks unridable now let's go find some board surfable waves, like you mentioned, Trestles and such.
Being teenagers with lots of board and body surfing experience and more ego than smarts, we could never get it out of our minds, and gave each other quick side glances and new what they were about.
Wedge II. We sat on the beach for 20 or 30 minutes trying to find a pattern to the peak and the break. There was none. We did discern when rideable it was a left unless it decided to close out in front of you. So we walked out on the jetty to the jump off point. Just then heard the siren of the rescue ambulance on shore with 4 lifeguards scrambling down to water's edge to pick up what look like a lifeless body.
What most body-surfers don't know about the Wedge is it forms from nowhere, peaks suddenly and breaks almost as quickly throwing 8' tons water down on 3' of water (basically sand at that height). If you don't know exactly when to tuck and roll back into the body of the wave, you shouldn't be out there. Can't recall how many supposedly accomplished body surfers swimming back over to the jetty after escaping the peak and looking down at the sand. We said leave it to the Wedge pros and we were gone.
Have I got that about right?
Size aside, what would you say is/was the best ride in So. Cal.? I'd vote Huntington Pier. There were also some good rides in San Diego at the Ocean Beach Pier and some in Pacific Beach on a good day.
In the early sixties, we caught halibut in Newport Harbor fishing off a dock. However, the fishing wasn’t very good in the harbor.
From the mid-sixties to 2000, I would occasionally take a half-day boat out to sea. In the summer, we usually caught a lot of bass and bonito, and an occasional barracuda, and in the winter, we fished for rock cod.
On rare occasions, we would encounter schools of Humboldt squid. When they were hooked, they fought back at you, spraying you with water, and when they were hauled on board, they would spary you with ink. They are edible, but as squid go, they’re not the best for eating.
To brag: When the old pier was blown apart from some storm, I donated to rebuild and have my name on their plaque of donors in the $1000 category. Look for first name initial R, second is H. I even volunteered for some heavy lifting during the rebuild.
I lived off magnolia and heil so I was right on the border of HB and FV. I used to love going out to the desert, surfing, etc. HB and OC as a whole has always been pretty conservative as there’s so much money made there.
I also loved seal beach as it was the only quiet beach in OC.
Not a bad idea. HB has a long storied past - good and bad. As long as it's not a "surf" film and has an interesting story-line, good actors, and a director who does his homework, it could work.
Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is outstanding, especially with his twists on the era. Although it's a little long and some scenes could have been eliminated. Still, it's very entertaining, especially with Kurt Russell's background narrative. I watch it when ever it comes on.
Yes, quaint little beach town with a main street. However, guess you've never been there on certain Holidays that turns the main street into a pub crawl.
Summers of 76 / 77 Huntington Beach and Newport were my hang outs during my “Surfing” Phase of life. Much happier, simpler times.
