Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley on Thursday blamed a “Democrat plant” for a question about what caused the Civil War. The presidential candidate neglected to include “slavery” in her list of reasons.
During a town hall on Wednesday, a member of the audience asked the former South Carolina governor what caused the Civil War. She gave an unclear word-salad response.
“I mean, I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do,” she said.
“I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are,” Haley continued. “I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. It was never meant to be all things to all people,” she said.

It’s only a “gaffe” in mainstream media fantasy land. No GOP primary voter cares that she didn’t give a progressive “muh slavery” answer.
I think it was a plant as well. I’m no Haley fan but to whine that she didn’t mention slavery is race baiting imo.
Her answer was pathetic by any standard.
It showed shallow thinking and just plain stupidity.
Correct. If I’ve learned anything by being on Free Republic for 20 years... It’s that the Civil War was NOT about slavery.
All she had to say was there were many causes of the Civil War—and she was not an expert on the topic.
Instead she babbled like an idiot.
The media’s spin though is simply she didn’t say it was slavery and only slavery.
Correspondence from Union troops was very clear what they believed they were fighting for:
“Preserve the Union”.
When the Emancipation Proclamation was issued many troops wrote home and said “I didn’t sign up for that.”
That is the view from the rank and file.
Obviously different political figures had their own motives.
I know what the media spin is.
That said—her response was dumb by any criteria.

Of course it was a dem plant. She knew that/ so why did she fall for it? All she had to do was say there were many reason.

She's angling to be the next VP. By sounding like the current VP.
And a Southern POW was asked why he was fighting, since he was too poor to own any slaves. He replied to his interrogator, "because you all are down here."

It doesn’t matter if someone is a plant or not, you can either answer the question or you can’t.
