An Oklahoma man was awarded $25 million in damages after a jury concluded that the state’s largest newspaper intentionally harmed him when it wrongfully identified him as the high school sports announcer who hurled racist remarks at players.

Scott Sapulpa was one of two announcers commentating on a March 2021 girls’ playoff game between Midwest City High School and Norman High School that made national headlines when the Norman team took a knee and the other commentator, Matt Rowan, went on a racist tirade against the girls.

“He later sued, alleging defamation and infliction of emotional distress, claiming that he suffered lasting damage as a result of the wrongful identity — even though his name was only attached to the article for less than three hours.”

If they made a mistake and corrected it by identifying correctly who had made the remarks then I don’t think he should have gotten damages.

“That term racist means nothing anymore.”

That’s a fact. It has become meaningless.

“f they made a mistake and corrected it by identifying correctly who had made the remarks then I don’t think he should have gotten damages.”

The US is the most litigious society in the history of the world. None other even comes close.

That term racist means nothing anymore . . .

Actually, it means that a libtard has lost yet another logical argument and has nothing left with which to counter.

A lie makes it's way around the planet before the truth puts it's pants on.

In todays world, an incorrect identification can get a person killed let alone emotional distress. IMHO the award is correct, there needs to be punishment for such shoddy work.

It was actually Matt Rowan who made the remarks, later blaming the incident on diabetes.

Diabetes makes you say racist things?

I dunno. You could be right. But then again if you go on air and say “F N” multiple times, you’re probably a racist.

Apparently it’s worth 25 million if it’s used against you

In my opinion, the way this litigation has been abused against conservatives, I don’t mind seeing them pay for the ramifications of their slander.

Thomas Sowell has often said that things would be quite different if Leftists had to live with the consequences of their actions and advocacies.

I agree with him.

Yes. And I can state from experience that high blood pressure does too.

Then it seems further proof that blacks are racists, because the only people that seem to do that routinely are blacks.

The way these things always seem to work is that the original charges are on the front page, and the correction is buried on page 37. So yeah, the damage may already have been done, even after only a few hours.

It's up to journalists to make sure they report a story accurately, especially when it's such an emotionally charged situation. Settlements like this send a clear message that journalists should heed.

I agree. Years ago, Gannett bought almost every mid-sized city newspaper and immediately shifted all reporting to the left (and at the same time doubling the price of a hard copy of the paper). They very seldom even allow a conservative opinion piece to be published. Also, they seed the opinion section with far-left wing articles/letters which they will then include with each paper no matter in what city it is supposedly published. They pretend the letter is from a local resident.

It is not hard to see why so many news sites are laying off employees.

The problem is they take their time to get the facts right they will be accused of a coverup.
