Hogan leads or ties major Democrats in Maryland Senate race: Poll
The Hill ^ | 02/15/24 9:30 AM ET | BY CAROLINE VAKIL

Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) is leading or tied with his top two potential Democratic challengers in the Maryland Senate race, according to a poll released Thursday.

The Emerson College Polling/The Hill/DC News Now survey found Hogan leading Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (D) in a hypothetical match-up at 44 percent to 37 percent among registered Maryland voters, with 19 percent undecided.

When Maryland voters are asked to pick between Hogan and Rep. David Trone (D-Md.), the poll shows a tighter race, with both men tied at 42 percent, and the remaining 16 percent undecided.

It’s a remarkable showing for a former GOP governor in a deep-blue state. Hogan only announced last week that he was running for outgoing Sen. Ben Cardin’s (D) seat. Meanwhile, polls show President Biden beating former President Trump in a hypothetical match-up there, 55 percent to 32 percent.

Hogan left office with a whopping 77 percent approval rating, according to a Gonzales poll last year. The Maryland Republican has also bucked his party at times as a vocal Trump critic, making him a formidable opponent in the blue state.

“In addition to the majority of Republican voters’ support in the general election, Hogan also holds broad appeal in a matchup against Trone among independents, at 48%, and also garners nearly a quarter of Democratic voters’ support,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a press release.

“In a matchup between Hogan and Alsobrooks, independents support Hogan 43% to 18%, and 31% of Democrats support Hogan.”

He’ll lose as will EVERY Republican in a close race. Until the GOP gets it through its skull, issues no longer matter in elections. Elections are now games. Who collects the most “ballots” wins.

I see no signs that the GOP has its act together. Instead, they are too consumed with “if Trump is for it, I’m against it” syndrome.

As a MD resident I do not believe this. This is gaslighting 101. I fully expect Trone’s $$$ to pull him across the finish line.

An actual Republican could not win in Maryland. Yes Hogan would be another McTraitor and all the bad stuff that goes with it.

Hogan is as good as it gets in Maryland. He’s not conservative but he’s better than a Dem. I know in some states that isn’t good enough. But in Maryland, it is. A conservative will never be elected.

And in Maryland Hogan is about as conservative as you’re going to see”.

Maryland, creator of Maryland’s “Rain Tax”?

Yet not a single state has reported an audit on their voter registration rolls showing how many bad names/ addresses were removed.

Polls don't mean squat. Ballots rule; not candidates.

A 50% conservative rating is better than 0%, isn’t it?

Lockdown Larry isn’t just a RINO, He’s openly antagonistic toward conservatives.

Ain’t a chance of him getting my vote in the primary. Maybe, just maybe I’ll pull the trigger for him in the general.

“And in Maryland Hogan is about as conservative as you’re going to see.”

That is how I see it. That is the best you can do in Maryland. So sad.

“Larry Hogan’s dad was in Congress a Republican on the House Watergate Committee in the 1970’s.

He voted to impeach Richard Nixon.”

Hogan was the only one of 17 Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee to vote with the Democrats on all 3 articles of impeachment against Nixon.

Hogan Jr. undoubtedly dreams of the day when he can vote to convict Trump on some bogus charge after the Democrat-controlled House (in 2025) impeaches him again.

BTW, there never was a full vote in the House regarding impeachment in 1974.

“A 50% conservative rating is better than 0%, isn’t it?”

If you’re referring to Hogan, the more appropriate question would be:

A 20% conservative rating is better than 0%, isn’t it?

Hogan won’t be anywhere near 50% on the important votes.

We (supposedly) have a republican form of government. Marion Barry was a perfect Mayor of Washington DC: a true representative of his constituents.

A couple of things, but not much. He did cut fees that were within his control. He handled the Baltimore riots well.
